L82 vs. Mustang GT
The GT and an L98 would be a good match, also the L79, L46.
The problem lies in the advances of the Mustang( or any newer car for that matter) over yours. They can cheaply mod a GT and do 13.5s . To get to 13.5s you will have to change the heads... Stock GT gears VS yours are not a facter.
My Cobra is already a low 13 car with just gears, K&N and flowmasters ... I can put it into the 12s for another $500.
Are you an Auto?
Now on the Revving up quick subject: My 12.5 1/4 69 Vette Revs very slow compared to My Cobra... so what... TQ from the Vette pulls from 2200 up to 6000. Cobra pulls from 4000-7000. I drove a few GTs and found them quite slow comparitively..

What everyone else has said is true - it's an apples and oranges comparison. The changes over the last 30 years that made engines more efficient also made them more powerful per displacement and more responsive to mods. My Mustang has a shorter stroke, roller cam, low friction everything, a higher stall converter, and greatly improved air and fuel management over the Vette. I added the exhaust, tweaked the TPS, and advanced the timing and the thing is an absolute rocket sled compared to the Vette. It's also much easier to drive with the auto. Put it in drive, stand on the throttle, and point it where you want to go. The computer shifts it at the torque peak and I usually get quite a jump on the manual trans guys who have to deal with redlines and shifting and RPM drops. It's also the hardest hitting stock auto trans I have ever driven. And it will run 14.50's all day long with the CD player blasting and the A/C on (cuts out at WOT). But, it's apples and oranges.
The Vette is a longer stroke engine, turning a heavy flywheel, through a manual trans full of molasses. The Q-Jet can't come close to the EFI in terms of throttle response. Make the Vette breath easier and you'll wake up a beast. But, it'll cost more than the equivalent performance gains to the Mustang. And it's way easier to change a PROM than change the heads.
It's interesting to note that the local ricers show much more respect to the Vette than they do the Mustang. They give the Vette a wide path, but I can't drive the Mustang at night on the weekends due to the constant buzz of the fart cans looking for a challenge. I guess to them, a Corvette is a Corvette is a Corvette - they're all fast.
But Captain_Kaboom is right - I'll drive the Vette any day the weather is good - and there's a lot of good weather coming up.
But be careful of the Mustang II's that are out there - not all of them are slow. I had a 1974 that was powered by a built 289, with a worked over C-4 and 3.55's. That car was scary fast and was the ultimate sleeper with the quiet mufflers tucked up underneath. I ruined many an ego with that car, but it was one of the biggest pieces of crap ever built. But, Motor Trend Car of the Year. Right for the times, I guess.
