Ok, I'm trying to prep the car for paint and I don't want to screw up the car or the emblems. Are they glued on with adhesive? I can only find a locating nub so I am assuming they are glued on. I need to remove all of the emblems on my '78. I'm working on the side cross-flags now.

Ahh emblems, I just order all new emblems for my 79. The sideones are easy to take off. Like you guessed they've been put on with that two sided adhesive tape and there's no bolts used in the side flags. there's two holes drilled to the fender where the emblem is connected, you can see one of the two by peaking under side the fender, use a small hammer or something to push it out a bit and when loose, gently try to pull it out with your hands. This worked for me just fine.

For those that are attached with adhesive only, I was able to do it without damage by using a thin steel wire (actually, a broken E-string from a guitar). Just form some sort of handles for both ends of the wire - simple pieces of wood work just fine. If the emblem has a "locating nub", the wire won't go through that, and you'll have to work it from both ends toward the middle where the nub is.

After the paint job, I reused my old emblems and used 3M weatherstrip adhesive to put them back on, after I removed all the old adhesive.

Good luck! :seeya

Thanks Jay. I managed to get the side emblem off by carefully using a putty knife. I didn't even scratch the paint (it's going to be history anyway).

That's a good idea Gator81. Those guitar strings are pretty strong. That reminds me, I need to change the strings on mine. It's been quite a while.

Just in case......fishing line tied to a couple pieces of doweling for handles can be used to slide back and forth to cut the adhesive will work......at least it did for me.........good luck
