Bowtie Overdrives 200R4 trans showed up a day early. Everything was in the crate and ready to start my install. I plan on taking my time so it might be a couple of weeks before it will be ready to go on a road trip. Just a question for those of you that have done this already; there is a switch included in the lock-up converter wiring. When do you use the switch? After 50mph, on the highway, but what about around town driving. Any dos’ and don'ts would be appreciated.
The converter will lock with the switch off around 35-40 in od.The switch when turned on will lock it at any speed.Either way it will release when brakes are applied.Never found much use for it myself.
I have mine wired with a switch that gives me fouth gear lockup one way and a locked convertor in 2-3-4 ( don't use that one much). If I am going to be driving on a road with 50+ speed like Telegraph, I 75 etc. I turn the convertor lock on. For just running around town I leave it off. I don't have the brake switch wired up, really don't see the need for it. The trans will not lock in first gear so why bother ? It would be the equivelent of pushing in the clutch on a 4 speed car every time you hit the brakes, no need for it.
 Way to go! Please keep us updated on the installation. Page62 turned me on to Bowtie, now I'm drooling over that exact tranny. Now I just need to come up with the money. If only I could sell my Vulcan.....and maybe my kids.....hmmmm
To each his own on the switch thing. Personally, I don't even has the 2-3 lockup switch wired up (although I might do it for grins one day). I only have the OD lockup wired into the brake pedal.
It's important to have the brake pedal wired in so that the engine will not stall in the event of a skid while the converter is in lockup mode.
BTW: Around the city, I keep the tranny in 3rd to lock out the OD. It is VERY hard on the tranny to use OD at low speeds. I only "engage" it when I get on the freeway -- kinda like warp drive. :D
Thanks for the information. I trained my wife to only use the 4th on the E-way on the 88 Suburban. (5.7L with 700R4) I didn't know if the same applied to this one. If I understand what you are saying is that the switch is not needed.
If you put the car into a skid in 4th gear with the convertor locked, I think that the engine stalling is not the worst of your problems.
