Default Brake bleed - a small lesson

I’ve been lurkin’ around the brake posts lately, trying to get info that would hopefully help with a problem I’ve been having with brake bleeding. I made a discovery that I thought I’d share.

To start, I replaced all brake calipers, the short lines, and turned all my discs last winter. Started this spring with brakes acting spongy. Looked at the old master cylinder, and it was junk, leaking out the back badly. So, I replaced it and, “while I was at it”, went ahead and replaced the booster because it was filled with fluid and I figured it was just a matter of time.

In any event, I’ve been messing around trying to get the air out of my system. Bled them twice myself and finally took it to the shop for a power bleed. 10 miles later, same problem. Now the lesson – Look your replacement parts over closely! I now knew it was a faulty replacement master cylinder. When I took it off, it was really obvious. Pitted, bent, and just plain nasty. I must have been in a hurry, or I would have noticed it. I even thought it acted weird when I bench bled it.

Probably won’t be the last time. Just hope it’s a while before I lose brain activity again.
