I took out the spedo/tach console to replace the relay for the wipers because it was shot. It was slamming down on the wipers while on.
I can't get the center console to line up!! the top refuses to go flush with the dash now and is very noticeable with the right sticking out about 1/2 in. It seems to be flush when I push on it. What am I doing wrong? Is there any trick to this to get the top of the guage cluster to stay flush with the dash? Please help me! It looks like chit!!

It would help if you had a picture to see exactly what you mean. If you were to peel back the vinyl on the lower dash pad, you would see there are two plastic nuts in there that the center guage bezel screws into, mine were broken into a lot of pieces, so the screws wouldn't hold. Maybe that's what is happening.
Re: Please help!!! Center guage cluster nightmare!! (A C)
Mine has A/C.... the chrome rimmed guage cluster has one screw to attach it to the dash. it screws up into the dash. There are screws into the tach/speedo console ands screws into the glove box thingy on the passenger side, but they are not holding the top in place. I have seen many uneven tops of this cluster in many early c3's at Carslile and other places, especially w A/C.
I am sorry, i don't have a digital camera yet. Maybe I'll borrow my neighbor's. hope this helps. Thanks for the response!!

The top piece should have three screws. One to hold the bezel to the dash, and two to hold the top piece (in your case, the a/c vent bezel) to the center guage bezel. There should be a total of seven scews. On my car, the upper screw hole was also stripped, so I used a slightly bigger screw. The material that it screws into is only plastic, so it strips very easily.

Yes, that's it. I am thinking of finding a plastic fitting to go up into the dash to screw into. And thanks for the heads up on the larger screw. I'll try it. maybe it will help.

I'm not being funny here but there have been several times when i was doing my interior (heck , anytime i work on it) that i have to walk away for awhile and come back when i am less frustrated. Then it seems like it just falls in place.
Take a break and try again. I don't remember having a problem with that area but it is sorta tight as is the speedo cluster.
The little things you see will never be noticed by others but you know its there and it drives you nuts.
Good luck

Be careful - the top of the center guage bezels like to snap at the skinny part that connects the lower part to the upper part. Maybe you bent it a little without knowing it.

This bezel is new. The previous owner made this mistake for me. Thanks for the heads up!!

The a/c center duct might be the culprit. Are you sure you have the a/c wiper bezel's center air deflector slipping into the the center duct correctly?
One place it could hang up is on the bottom of the duct where the wiper bezel
is screwed to the center duct. If you don't already have it off, it helps to remove the passenger side dash panel to be able to look as you position the center bezel in place. Just a thought.
