Default 70 LT1 Original Bubba Vette

A few weeks ago in a related thread, I mentioned I had a lead on a non-matching numbers 1970 LT1 convertible car. Well I check it out yesterday and this cosmetically correct car has been raped! I knew it would be interesting when I opened the door and "no" trim tag!

But related specifically related to an LT1 and what one would expect to find...here's what I found (or didn't find).

1. No evidence of TI amplifer (and no three holes for bracket)
2. Return fuel line was plugged off with bolt and hose at frame rail
3. Shroud had a one-piece seal
4. Head casting number of 3991492 (service replacements)
5. Holley carb (new) with 4779-9 number and 1651 (date code?)
6. Coil was chrome plated replacement
7. distributor?
8. Hood bolts were all new gold iridite
9. Hood looked too nice on underside (should there be insulation)
10 Hinges, support were all painted flat black.

I simple did not find engine remnants that would have suggested at one time...an LT1 car. Did I miss anything? How about those heads? Appear to be the correct service replacements currently available.

What I found that confirmed it had been altered from original:

1. Blue Smoke and lots of it!
2. Would not idle properly
3. No spare tire carrier
4. Monoleaf spring
5. Rusted windshield frame...painted over
6. Body gaps on rear portion
7. oval cover on inside rear wheel well...missing
8. I'm not a body guy but suspected the rear body was a one piece panel replacement
9. ECS line from tank was plugged with bolt
10. Base coat clear coat

Otherwise it was a nice driver requiring considerable attention. Guy had about $16K in it which he would let it go for that. I couldn't see much above $13k...maybe $10k!

He asked me what I thought and then added "don't tell me anything that's wrong!" I shared with him that I wasn't finding any engine components that would have carried over from an LT1 engine and left it at that. He may have this one for awhile.

I almost forgot the scary ride! I got to drive this car and the play in the steering had to be at least three inches...from center! I felt as tho the wheel was traveling six inches from one side to another before making contact...scary! I hit the brakes pretty hard and it stopped...ok.

Well, I guess another car has been "disproved". The return fuel line almost says it all- who on earth would add one to a car? I looked at a '70 coupe project a few years ago, advertised as an LT-1. Turns out it was a 350-350HP, but regardless it was a real POS. I politely told him that this was not an LT-1, and showed him a couple of the differences, and suggested he might want to change his ad. Oh, no, his "buddy" checked the #s and it was an LT-1! Well, whatever.
BTW- there is no underhood insulation on a '70.

I am not for sure about a 70, but my 69 had a small piece of hood insulation just above the radiator. There are three pins on the hood in a sort of triangle to hold the insulation on.

Base coat/clear coat would be a plus for me. I would actually drive the thing and the base/clear would hold up better than crappy laqcuer. I swear if my fingernails are too long I put new scratches in my car.

seems pretty to me. I hate the fact that someone will believe this guy eventually and be really ripped off. It's the fact that since his BS didn't work on you, he'll keep trying until some poor fool buys into it. :mad
