Default air cleaner value? please help...

i have a complete 1979 air cleaner set up for sale for $300 OBO... http://signguy.freeservers.com/catalog.html
i was advised that that might be a little steep...
so i went searching and easily found the front duct, side duct and the two flex ducts all for about $90 total...
however i can not find the actual air cleaner anywhere...
doc rebuild has a 1980 and a 1978 and both are $500...
i want to get to the bottom of this so that i am sure that i am asking a true and honest price for this set up...
is this air cleaner not available?
are they really this expensive?
am i asking too much or too little for this item...
please help...
thank you...

Gary
I just sold my air cleaner alone. 1979 Very nice condition for $75.00 + shipping. I also have the duct work that the buyer (Forum member) did not need. I had the complete setup for sale for $100.00 + shipping.
Hope this helps. You could probably get $150.00 for all of it but I think you will have it a while.

IMO the $300 price is high unless you are shooting to sell the assembly to an NCRS member with a 79 who needs the assembly for his 100 pt. restoration. Since most performance minded people will use an open element air cleaner (for good or for ill) the original dual snorkle air cleaner is not greatly desirable.

The $150 mentioned in a previous post seems more reasonable to me. Keep in mind value is a relative term, like the old saw - "one mans trash is another mans treasure."

good luck

I have to agree/disagree with those comments. Those who have discarded this equipment will very much regret it at a later date if they wish to go back to stock. And there are many out there. But those who have gone on to engine mods will not bother. So go in whatever direction but if you are going to stock, that setup is a bargain. I would buy it in a PayPal second at $150.00.

*Edit*-Here is the rationale that I sent to SignGuy by e-mail. I stand by it.

On the air cleaner and accessories I based my estimate on salvage yard
prices as well as GM prices. The accordian hoses, and the side duct are
still available from GM. I have them. And your price is very close. The
front duct is harder to find as you have to do a secondary level (dealer
level rather than just GM depot) search and most parts people will not do
that for you. The air cleaner is discontinued but many yards have it. I
combine new and salvage prices to arrive at a total. GM prices on new parts
are discounted by me at ~50% (that is a typical margin). The same with
catalogue prices; although sometimes more than 50%. I guesstimate wear and
tear if possible through pics and at the far end out comes what I believe to
be a fair price. That is how I arrived at $300.00. I believe that price is
fair for both seller and buyer. I would not budge if I were you.

i see both sides of the issue here...
i have absolutely no plans to ever put her back to stock and hense i have desided to sell this stuff...
i am mainly selling me "old" stuff to finance new leather seats...so...
i am putting this item up for bid...anybody interested (including you, paul) can bid what it is worth to you...
BTW...new and better pix of it have been posted on my site... http://signguy.freeservers.com/catalog.html
thanx...gary

Put it on ebay and you can find out what it will bring.

I was at the Chevy VetteFest in Chicago and saw just the air cleaner alone for $180. Granted, this was at a show/swapmeet so the price may have been bumped up a bit, but the air cleaner was nowhere NEAR the condition that yours is in. I think the $300 price is about right, but as my uncle always said, something is only worth what someone is willing to pay. I have kept my air cleaner and snorkels, although I don't plan on putting my vette back to stock. I'm just a packrat and think I'll always have a use for something. ;)

Price is a bit high IMHO. I'd have to say $200-$250 for that complete set-up.

The price is a bit heavy, but on the other hand you cannot source the complete setup that easy. I think the price is fair considering that you cant walk into your gm dealer and buy it. At a car show 3 years ago there was a guy next to me with his 1981 and he was in the process of bringing the engine compartment back to stock, and at that time he was having problems
sourcing the air dam and air cleaner.

You should be able to do a search on ebay and see what similiar setups have already sold for. You'll have to find a few though. I sold one Corvette power window switch for $1. The next week I put up another that went for $20. Go figure.
