Default Cops...sheesh

I was driving my vette along a nice single lane road at 4:40 PM in front of a school (the schools are closed for spring break but I'm doing 25mph anyway). Single lane no-passing, when all-of-a-sudden, a white unmarked city police car comes up behind me at a VERY HIGH rate of speed. I figure that he's going to hit his lights and go around me. Nope, this idiot runs right up behind me and I think for a second that he's going to plow into me. Past the school, I speed up to 40mph(the limit). He stays on my tail then he backs off a little, then it's back on my tail. He slows down a little and then charges up behind me again. First chance I get, I put on my turn signal and pull
off the road to let him by. He drives by at the speed limit and keeps going. Was he trying to spook me into speeding so he could pull me over or was this a cop with road-rage because I was going 25 in a school zone? Either way this person shouldn't be carrying a badge and playing games with a 4,000 lb car. What does a citizen do in that situation? End-of-rant, thanks. Suggestions and your thoughts are welcome.

The officer may have been "running your plate" on the in car system on a routine check for outstanding warrants, tickets, possible stolen vehicle, etc. It would make sense for him to catch you to get plate info, back off to enter it, speed up to check registration tags, etc.

I hate how they think they have to stay 1 foot behind you. I wish sometimes I was driving a beater and hit the brakes and have them plow into you. I agree maybe he was checking you out but do they have to be so bold and ignorant. That kind of harrassment is not needed and dangerous

. This happened to me a lot last summer, especially for the first month I had the car, between the end of June and the end of October, different cops, sometimes in other towns, ran my plate over 30 times  (this is a fact, not a guess). But, I'm only 17, so I kind of look suspicious driving a vette

Good point, because of the dangerous way he was driving, I couldn't imagine he was doing anything intelligent but maybe he was...
Thanks for the input

yeah, thats it...tailgate while talking on a radio and using your computer...

too bad that badge doesn't come with common sense.

I still vividly recall the time a cop BLASTED by me in the center divider of a freeway that was relatively clear. Scared me so bad I swerved into the other lane without even looking - I'd rather side swipe someone then get T boned or rear-ended, which in the few milliseconds it took is what I was afraid was happening. Luckily there was nobody next to me.

next time just keep it cool and if they get to close, find a driveway to turn into.

I saw state trooper smoking a cigarette and filling his car up with gas, woundn't want to get on his bad side.

Try driving around with license plates that read "BYBYCOP" like mine do and see what happens. Normally the police love it, they smile and wave.

However I posted this before about going through a small town about a cop that did to me what happened to you.

The cops sees me and pulls out in traffic and I could tell he was coming for me by the way he was eyeballing me. He pasted two cars in busy traffic to get to me. Then I thought he was going to ram me and then would let off and charge me again. :mad

He did this all through town and I wanted to drop down a gear and run the bastard but didn't have big enough ********* to do it ;). Then the road goes to highway speed and he's doing the same thing only at faster speeds. A few miles outside of town I guess once we got out of his juradition he pulled over and stared at me driving off and finally turned around. I think he may have got a jaywalking call or something.

To the forum members in law enforcement this wasn't meant to be a put down on you, almost all of my encouters with the police have been good and some I have meant are wonderful people.

Thanks for all the replies, they made me smile about the whole thing. Tominator, your cop must have been talking on the radio, checking his computer, driving at high speed and eating a doughnut for him not to have been firing "warning shots" at your plate. :)
To the vast majority of law enforcement who do a good job everyday...thank you. To the small minority that think a gun and a badge puts you above the law, I expect you to set a better example.
Just for the record I bought my 80 vette in August of 1979. It's got 268,000 miles on it. It's a survivor with ALL original paint, never been in any accident.
I've kept it this way by always driving defensively. That's why the cop and his bullying antics steamed me so much.
Spring has arrived in Indiana, so tomorrow I'm taking the T-tops off and enjoying the cruise into work.

Buddy of mine thought that was the best idea he ever had in his Hyundai. He learned that the Hyundai doesn't take rear collision's well and that them Crown Vic's sure are expensive to repair. :auto::smash::auto:

RobertN sounds like your speaking from expierence, and your probably right! I just usually run the plate to see what year it is and to get a good look at it.

Wow - I have 240k miles on my 89 Buick - original motor 'n' tranny.
Have you replaced/rebuilt yours in the 268k miles ?

NHvette, yeah I replaced the L-48 with a 406 back in '82. I painted it GM blue put the Q-jet and cold air intake on. Except for the headers it looks bone stock. I love telling the Mustang guys at Raceway Park that it's a stock 350.
Vettes are easier to find parts for than Buicks. You must have done some serious work to get your Buick to 240,000 miles!

Ahhh, the good ole double standard. Not sure about other states, but when I was in Florida & a paramedic, I was shocked to learn that the law states all emergency & police vehicles must observe the speed limit. When running code 3, they are permitted to go 15 over the limit & ONLY when running hot. I'm sure the police NEVER abuse that law, right? The bottom line is that policemen & women are humans & as such, there are good cops & bad cops. Most of them are good, some aren't. That's life & unfortunately, we have to live with it. The other option is to mouth off to them & well - many of you have seen the Chris Rock skit about that!

This might make you feel better

This last weekend I was driving my Jaguar next to my buddies 2002 SS Camaro and our other friend was behind us in his 2003 Maxima along with a stranger in a Honda We were all dicking around at about 53 MPH I saw the Honda hit his brakes and I was behind the SS and my girlfriend said ROBBIE!! and I said chill out were ok. She said what about the CHP I said WHAT CHP!!! She said the one that just turned around. I don't know why but I went around the left side of the SS and cut in his lane to catch the onramp to the freeway. The SS went right behind me up my butt intill we hit the freeway and passed me. I watched my morror the whole way and never saw the CHP, we were over 130 as we got the the next off ramp my girlfriend said "you better call Jason and tell him" I had just assumed he saw the CHP as well. He did not se it. I took a left over the freeway right behind the SS as I am telling him on the phone " I am not slowing down quite yet" we both went over the freeway. I decided to go a normal speed over the over pass as to not draw attention. I looked to my left and saw the CHP getting off the freeway. As we both came to the light I went right and the SS waited for the light and went left, this leads me to know how we were going 53 MPH earlier. the CHP caught my buddy in the SS and did not give him a ticket because he was already parked but he was seriously pissed off and told him we would never run from him again and tell his buddy he is going after him next time. just so you all know I respect the police and have no idea why I did this but it was one of those fine line situations whereI just had to do it. i would assume part of our sucess is the CHP was driving an Expedition. We were safe and the freeway only had one other car on it :_dupe: :_dupe: :_dupe: :_dupe: :_dupe: :_dupe: :_dupe:
