If the rear caliper leaked a little during reassemble does it mean it is bad? Never had a problem with it and they look new. Was this just bleed through while compressing the pads back.
Drive the car around the block and brake real hard a couple times. When you get home look at the inside of your wheels. If its leaking there will be brake fluid sprayed all over the inside. Thats the easiest way to tell for sure.
I was going to use the rear calipers off of my 80 onto my 71 the other day. When I pulled them off 4 months ago they were dry, went I went to install them I noticed some seepage around one of the pistons. I didnt chance it, AZ sells some remans for $54.00 each. Now I have a very firm pedal and no leaks. :)
I have run into leaks before while installing the pads, the pistons get cocked in the bore and fluid leaks past.
For a little while I kept wiping the rim off and quickly it stoped. Brake fluid gets trapped behind the outer seal and leaks out over time. This doesn't mean any new fluid is getting past the inner seals.
when you say they look new, do you mean you took them apart, cleaned the pistons, bore, seals,, and they look new?
only takes a speck of dirt in the wrong spot to cause a leak.
i clean mine every 5-10 years, there is always some crap in there.
They look less than 5 years old. Nope, I did pull them apart. It was one of those "if it ain't broke, why break it" situations. Pads look 80% or better.
Look like I cocked them to one side and fluid passed through. I'll hold out before pulling them.
