Default electric fan switch help needed

Go easy on me.....this is my first post!

I have rebuilt the L82 engine for my 1980 and am ready to drop it back in the hole.....except for one part. I cannot find a new fan switch that goes in the right side head. The GM part number is 8993311. The Delco number is 213-51. The Chevy dealer (and other parts places) tell me that it has been discontinued and is no longer made. I've also been told that 80 was the only year that particular switch was used. The one for an 81 or 82 "looks" the same; but there is obviously some difference. Does anyone know if I could use the one for an 81 or 82 without any problems, or where I can get the correct one? I really need to get back on the road!

I didnt know the 80 came factory with electric fan. Have you tried one of the vette vendors like Ecklers or Mid America or ZIP Products?

Im not sure exactly what you need but I see a whats listed as "temperature sender" for '79-'80 in the Zip catalog. Part# for that one is ES-386. The part# for the '81-'82 is ES-387. So there must be a difference, but I dont know what it is. http://www.zip-corvette.com or call 1-800-962-9632. Hope this helps

I saw the parts in the Zip catalog; but I'm 99% positive that they are the temperature sender units for the gauge. They go in the left side head (in the same location as the fan switch on the right). I already have a new one of them. It is available from Chevy and several others. Thanks for your help!

this is an easy one. what temp. are you looking to turn the fans on at?
hypertech offers 160 and 180 degree. http://www.hypertech-inc.com/fanswitch.html
i have a 190 in my vette now. i got it at j&m corvettes 1-860-645-6389
84 and up corvettes use a 210 i think.
your local dealer should have those.

On my 80 the right hand temp. switch is for the aux. electric fan. If I remember correctley it dosen't come on till around 230 deg. If you have a mech. fan or some other cooling you could just plug the hole and drive the car till you find what you need. The aux. fan was a just in case--stop and go traffic on a hot day ect..

Right. I do have a mechanical fan and the electric is for backup. That's why I was wondering if the switch for an 81 or 82 would work. It may be that their temperature range was different (and therefore the difference in the part numbers); but that probably wouldn't matter that much.

At any rate, I appreciate everyone's suggestions. Thanks!

I suspect you are correct. The '81 was first year of ECM controled spark advance and fuel delivery, and engine is equipped with an oxygen sensor, so I suspect beginning in '81 the engines were tuned by factory to run a little hotter to effectively burn more gases, and therefore expell fewer pollutants.
