I've changed to a 700r4. My safety switch is limiting the travel of the shifter. I know the easy way is to just remove, but I wan't my reverse lights to work, which is also operated by the switch. Is there a switch out there that has the PRND321? I've left a message with 700r4.com and have no answer yet. Thanks for the help.
You can get a microswitch from a hotrod shop or Summit racing that is intended for turning on a nitrous system at WOT from the secondary carb linkage. Such a microswitch could be adapted to close a circuit just when your shifter is in the park, reverse, or neutral positions, and it would never get in the way of the shifter's path. This could be wired to a relay, available from Radio Shack, to enable your starter circuit.
Actually, if you get an aftermarket ratchetting shifter from B&M, it includes all the necessary microswitches, and besides, you can get much more brutal launches if you can hold it in first manually and then bang the ratchetting shifter into each of the gears. Why don't you just get one of those? It'll solve your problems and also give you the part number for the relay you need.
Let me modify something I said. You'll want TWO microswitches. One to engage in park and neutral, and the other to engage only in reverse. The park/neutral switch would allow starter enable, and the reverse would only turn on your back-up light.
But again, B&M takes care of this for you if you buy their shifter.
I have their Megashifter in a third gen F-body. Works great and looks good.
Did you change the shift plate? I had to make an additional space to reach the 1st gear. It seems all of my adjustment in the shift cable is at the transmission. Im not sure what your shifter cable looks like, but mine has no adjustment at the top. Thanks Rob Parker
