Ok.. so I got around to looking at my emission hoses... and whoever bubba'd the car up before me... created his own routing scheme.... vacumn advance is going to the wrong place, some hoses are plugged with bolts.. etc
My Shop manuals are somewhat lacking in consise diagrams and This is what Dr. Rebuild has for my routing... http://www.docrebuild.com/dr-r-web/3750372.HTML Except that my thermostat housing has two valves on it.. not one. My routing does not look like that!!
Q1. What are the technical considerations if I were just to remove all the
Emission Control systems ? I have no Emissions Testing in my county...
Q2. If I were to keep it..Is there some better diagram(s) ? somewhere that I could access (nothing I could find on the faq, or tools forum)
Re: Help! - Emission control system ... keep or not ? (Northwest79)
If there is no testing on the horizon for you, and you want to clean up the look and possibly get some better performance I would remove it and store it. Snap some pics first in case you want to put it back on later. There are relativly few of these cars on the road today. It aint gonna make the world burn up.
Re: Help! - Emission control system ... keep or not ? (Justin79-L-82)
Paul79 - Thanks for the pic, my Routing is the 350 CID/5.7L (910L4) in the upper right of that same page... and then some. I also have a hose coming ut of the rear of the carb that apparently is supposed to go to the aircleaner.
Has anyone seen any good articles on the technical ramifications of removing this system ?
Re: Help! - Emission control system ... keep or not ? (Northwest79)
I take it you have an L-82 but you may equally have an L48 car. Know that your engine is calibrated to the emission control devices, transmission and catalytic converter. This includes carb calibration, timing and vacuum advance. Once you rip out your smog...you'll have to adjust those factors to keep your engine running smoothly.
Don't forget to plug the holes in the exhaust manifold...otherwise you'll have host exhaust pooring into engine compartment :)
Re: Help! - Emission control system ... keep or not ? (Northwest79)
Ditch it, but as mentioned before, take some pics in case you can't find anyone who will let you slide w/ inspections and you have to throw it back on. You'll probably gain a few ponies
