O.K., I now have a Mobil 1 oil filter on and have tossed all the Fram's. My next question is what oil do you guys(and gals) use. I have used Wal-mart's Super Tech 10w-30 figuring oil is oil. Of course I also thought filters were pretty much all the same and got educated. Thoughts please. :)
Most of the studies have determined for normal street use, oil is oil, if you change it regularly. Synthetic or the new blends would be better for real high performance motors. Joe
This is one of those threads that if I didn't know better was a :troll Seriously, everybody has an opinion on this subject - some more informed than others :D - but all worthwhile; and since you want opinions, here's mine:
I use Mobil1 10W-30 @ 5000 mi. intervals in the PT Cruiser and Tundra; Mobil1 15W-50 @ 5000 mi. or 1 year in the motorcycles; and Chevron Supreme 10W-40 dino with changes every 3500 mi. or annually in the C3.
For filters I've settled on Wix or Wix made clones (NAPA Gold, Castrol MaxPro, Penske, Car Quest, etc.) as the having best combination of filtration and flow for my 4 wheeled applications.
I'd also suggest spending some time - if you haven't already - perusing the bobistheoilguy.com forum http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi for all sorts of oil and filter related discussion.
The overall consensus (sp?) of the magazines some other experts is that a good synthetic like Mobil 1 does make for less friction and longer engine life.
Check in the archives, there was an exhaustive thread on the subject. Some of the posts read like they were written by oil chemists or geologist or metallurgists-basically people who knew about the molecular structure of oils. One thing I derived from those posts was that multi-grade oils have more polymers and less lubricating stuff than straight weights. I guess if ambient temp varies too much, it becomes a tradeoff due to thinning or thickening of the oil. You oil guru's, please correct me if that is not correct.
At the moment, I run the Mobil 1 filter with Valvoline Max Life (engines with over 75,000 miles) 10W-30. It can be run in any motor though. When I get a whole new short block and heads, I going to run Valvoline for the first 5,000 miles, and then go to a full synthetic (this is the recommended procedure so that the rings will seal properly).
I really haven't made up my mind on what oil I will be using in this engine after I do the initial 20 minute cam break-in(Valvoline 30W), but just out of personal preferences it will not be synthetic. The engine builder suggested a 20-50W. By the way... an interesting thread on Fram filters. If a Fram filter can tank in 20 minutes they deserve to be sued as that is what is on this engine at present with the system already once pre-primed. I'll switch after I drain the oil after that initial break-in.
