I have a 1980, and my problem is in the area just below the wiper arm assembly. I don't know what this area is called other than it looks like a trough. Currently, it is all cracked and dried up, and I'm sure water would get in. What do I apply to reseal this area? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
I would go to your Auto Paint Supply and get some Brushable seam sealer. You want to scuff the area before you Brush it on light then wait a day and go over it again, wait 1 hour then do it again. Wait a couple days for it to setup and when it setup mask the area off and topcoat. The kind I use is made by 3M and is grey.
For sealing, I'm using a polyurethane roof/flashing sealer. (Home Depot)
The stuff goes on nice, sticks like crazy, and cures to a flexible consistency
so it won't crack open again. It does take a week for this stuff to cure.
Someone else posted a couple weeks back - masked off the area and
sprayed the 'trough' with rubberized undercoating.
I used a spray rubberized undercoating. Your GM dealer has a excellent version of this. It takes heat and a day or so to set but it is impermeable and flexes with temperature changes. Just mask things off and spray.
Thanks for all the info! When I do this, do I remove the wiper arms? Or, can I get away with masking them off? Naturally I'll mask off the under hood stuff and the windshield. Anything else I need to know?
