Radiator Support pics - plus Danger Dave PSA
over the pic and 'show pic'. Bandwidth on my home server is limited.
OK - so besides working on the bathroom floor all weekend, I managed
to squirm down to the garage for some 'fun'. I started out by looking at two
radiator supports that I have. One is from my rusty 75 - and the other was
given to me by a friend/CF member (73ken73). As you can guess, it was from
a 73 (SB - 75 SB compatible).
First, I will show the supports before doing anything (evaluation). This gives
you a good idea how these things look during inspection. Next, I will show the
one that I chose to restore - after a good wire-brushing. Lastly, this post will
warn about the
of powerwire brushes (yes, I wore my glasses this time - eyes are OK).
Here is a series of 6 pictures that show the 73 support (good one).
There is some rot - but it looks to be fixable :

Now, three pics of the support from the 75 (very bad) :

Here is one area that has me confused. The top edge of the 73 has weld-nuts
in the center two holes, while the 75 has them in the outer 2 holes on each
side of the top. I suspect the mounting brackets, so I will be scoping Ken's
73 this Friday for clues.

Now, the work begins :smash: . I wire brushed nearly the entire 73 support
with a new wire brush on my high speed grinder. All this took less than an hour.
Nice tool. Here is what I ended up with after brushing:

As you can see, the relatively good looking support is all swiss cheese at the
bottom. It's a LOT worse than it looked at the start. I will need to buy another
piece of angle to fix this. :smash: :smash: The entire lower box needs to be
replaced or patched. The grinding wheel comes next. I am thinking of building
this back up with a perforated steel angle - to let the insides dry better.
NOW - for your Public Service Announcement. We have all (likely) used a wire
brush on a drill or grinder. Have you read all the warnings/instructions ?
I didn't. Here, read the brush itself : WARN OTHERS IN THE AREA !!
Huh ??

Well, I had the eye protection down - but didn't expect what I found later. In
reading the literature, I see that safety glasses AND a full face shield AND
protective clothing for flying debris and broken wires.
Here's what I found after I was done:

OUCH - actually I didn't even feel it.

scraped - the other blistered, so I know what you mean. If you look closely
at the brushed core support, blood stains are visible on the top right. Kept on going.

I'm currently in a mess trying to find/replace the core support for my '74. A support (rotten beyond repair) with the welded nuts on the outside holes (to fasten the radiator brackets) came out of car. Now the replacement support from Zip for '74 didn't have welded nuts there and the old radiator brackets (the ones that hold the cushions) wouldn't line up. I blamed this on Bubba and not Zip but wondered what the real story is. Complicating things one of the new radiator brackets ordered to replace old is exactly the same as old bracket  and have seem to have missed placed remaining old bracket for comparision. Now worried if the radiator I just spent ~$200 to recore will fit?
From your pix looks like Zip sent the correct support for '74 (without welded nuts on outer holes) but brackets & radiator are still in question.
If your succesful with the '73 support susitution please post any mods/alterations. :yesnod:
Again thanks for the pix.

For most of the cleaning I had the caliper halves on a peice of wood and held it down any way I could-even with my feet. On the last 2 halves I had a towel close by and lucky me, the wire brush grabbed the towel and went crazy and pulled the drill out of my hand , whipped it around, and came up and had the drill steel body hit me square under my nose. Any lower and Im sure it would have taken out some teeth. My mustache area was swollen for over a week.
Fun stuff. You have to repect the power tools. Im just glad it wasnt anything with more power. NH - A good PSA

Dave- I think you ought to consider installing Handicap controls on the car during your restoration so that you will be able to drive it when you're done!
