Has anyone installed a switch on the transmission that controls the backup lights? Can you tell me where to start? I've ordered and received the part and I'll be going under the car this weekend. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. :flag
The switch is mounted on a bracket which attaches vto the transmission case via two of the side cover bolts. The "lever" on the switch connects to the reverse gear lever on the transmission with a small rod. When the transmission is put into reverse, the reverse gear lever pivots and thereby throws the backup light switch lever to close the circuit and complete the connection, delivering +12v through the switch and on to the reverse lights. The pigtail from the wiring harness which connects to the wiring for the backup light switch comes through the firewall down between the master cylinder area and the transmission tunnel. It's a two wire connector with a pink and a green (if memory serves) wire.
Do you have the small rod and clips needed to connect the switch to the reverse gear lever?
That switch is over rated. When I pulled my trany out last summer to put in a centerforce Dual friction clutch, I had the switch installed backwards so my back up lights only went on going forward. I just took the switch off. It isn't like you get a lot of light back there anyway.
Look behind you before you back up and stick your head out the window. Works better.
Let us know how hard it was to replace. I would like to replace mine too. Backup lights quit working about 2000 forward miles ago but they are needed to pass inspection, which is due. Arghhh :smash:
