My distributor module went out. Replaced it. Now get a code 42.
What's that. Shop told me EST - electronic spark timing. Car runs great, it seems to be running better. But, what is cause. And, Check Engine Light stays on. An open ground or something?
I don't have an '82, but FWIW, my Haynes manual says, for a code 42:
"Electronic Spark Timing bypass circuit or EST circuit is grounded or open. A malfunctioning HEI module can cause this code".
Sounds like you already knew that.
Is it leftover from the failed dist. module?
If you diconnect the battery will it clear the old codes?
Are you sure the new module is connected correctly?
I still had my original module and put it back in. When installing it, I think the four pin connector might have been put in upside down, if that is possible. Anyway, if not, the original is back in, and everything works. No codes, etc.
And, found that code 42 means HEI module failure. Which, again, leads me to think that the replacement was installed wrong.
