'nother Carburetor
Oh, what a difference. :yesnod:
The carb I broke my motor in with had some issues. Inconsistent idle, very poor performance on real HOT days, etc. When I put the car together I had ordered in an Edlebrock 1903 (hot air choke/direct replacement for OEM) and indeed it was there when I put the motor in.
But after the motor was in, and I got to thinking about the electric choke. I liked the idea, but the only thing I had in stock in the smog legal Q-Jet line was the 1905. This 1905 carb is the Edlebrock version of a QJet replacement for the Dodge/Chry Thermoquad carb. I have them in stock to replace Thermoquads with cracked phenolic housings (very common)
From the get-go I was disappointed in performance. Maybe it was a bad carb - and maybe just the wrong application. Dunno :hat Dont Care! :jester
Today I put the right carb on it. The 1903 w/hot air choke that I originally had ordered in just for my car. Right away, the performance came crisper. Runs great! Weather today was not so hot so I am still waiting to see how the real hot idle is...but if it improves anywhere NEAR as much as the other problems I had, I'll be stylin'!!
Unfortunately the Dyno showed the same HP and Torque readings :mad but I guess you can't have it all! At full throttle they are both 795 CFM. :seeya

Ohh, what a difference!! Just drove it to my Corvette Owners' club meeting in San Diego. There is no comparison to the first carb! Idle quality is better, and the stab at low speed is crisp and superb.
Guess it really was a wrong calibration or something on the other one. I'm   sailin' now for sure!

I did the same thing but went through three carbs before I got it right.

Funny. The hot rods I've had in the past never gave me any grief! I ran Holleys for years and even an AFB on one smallblock (a 13 second '56 Bel Air that was all stock body-no glass)
The last one I built was a cherry '70 Nova. I used an L-82 350 in it, Turbo 400 and 4:11 12-bolt posi. Really quick car....and the carb was a Performer (Not the Q-Jet style) on a Performer manifold. That one ran like a raped ape for five years before I sold it. Never once did I regret the carb choice! And of course the years of the '70s all we had to choose from were Rochester Qjets and Holleys.
But the bottom line is that I am terrificly pleased with this new carb and if it gives me any grief in the future, I'll just sell it and send my OEM carb to Lars! :flag
If you ever have carb problems, don't fret, ask Lars. He just sent me a new set of secondary metering rods. Will be installing them in my 1904. He sent me a nice set of main jets/metering rods earlier this year that really improved things (he also rebuilt my carb).
I'll be keeping my 1904 q-jet until it (or Lars) expires. :D

Same as mine I think but with electric choke. If I'd had one in stock I'd have used it. With headers and aluminum manifold it takes a while for the heat stove to heat up the choke enough for it to fully open. Maybe there's a way to correct this?? :hat
