Today the weather finally broke and I was able to drag the car out. This afternoon, while I was supposed to be at work, I decided to go top the tank off with some 100 octane gas for my new motor. The car continues to have trouble maintaining a steady idle and I was messing with it at the gas station and Chris81 shows up. He lives nearby and he offered to help so we went over to his house. Over the next few hours we troubleshooted the problem and found several vacuum leaks around the carb base/manifold and between the carb body and base plate as a result of several loose screws in the carb itself. We pulled the carb and replaced the base gasket and tightened everything up, checked the timing, etc.
I still have some issues, but with his help, the car did run a lot better on the way home. Thanks again!
As soon as I can get some time and after a few more break in miles, I am going to take it back to the engine builder to fine tune it some more. I have something going on that is causing the erratic idle and maybe even robbing me of some power, particularly low end. I really have not jumped on it yet, but at times it just feels sluggish. It is either the carb or the distributor, because everything else is new! I guess I should just have just replaced everything.
Hudman... glad to hear it ran a little better, but it's still got issues. I checked the old gasket against a spare base plate, and from the impressions, it looks like the passages for the vacuum ports run off the gasket (gasket cut a little too short at front of base plate). The newer style (thicker) gasket covers everything very well, so we ought to try one of those for kicks. Almost sounds too easy...
