I upgraded my stock points dist with Pertronix Ignitor kit. It is a kit that converts the stock points dist to electronic function. Uses a stock style canister coil. The stock coil will work but I upgraded that to a 50k volt accel coil. I did have an ignitor go bad once but it was my fault for being bubba with things and messin with wires the wrong way. Other than that its been real relaible. Plus you can carry yur old points and condenser with you and slap them back in in 20mins if the ignitor ever fails. http://www.pertronix.com you can also get these kits at summit and jegs. the IgnitorII kit is a tad over $100.
I sent my dist. to Dave Ray in CA. He rebuilt it and converted it to full HEI. When he rebuilds it he puts new bearings in it and gives it a general overhaul. I went this way because Petronix did not have a kit to work with my dist. Dave also puts on a new rotor and cap. He charged me $175 plus shipping to him. He paid for shipping back. He cleans it up and makes it look new. I would highly recommend him. Here is his website http://www.davessmallbodyheis.com
Re: Need a distributor recommendation (1971454ILvette)
I swear by the Davis HEI www.performancedistributors.com They are custom curved based on your cam/heads, etc. and the price is competetive with the Mallory's of the world.
I'm using the Pertronix Ignitor with an MSD 6A box and coil. It's trouble free and always has been. I personally like the 20 degree spark duration the MSD 6A box gives.
I recently contacted Crane about thier new XRi ignition module. They said it is not compatable with any spark box such as the MSD. If you don't intend to use any add ons, I'd suggest the XRi because it's a bit simpler than the Pertronix.
