There are two different heater hoses. The 5/8" comes from the heater core and routes direct to the ???? and the 3/4" comes from the core to the overflow tank and then to the ????.

I know there are only two answers (manifold and water pump) but I am thinking over the years it is quite possible they have gotten mixed up and I want to get them right this time.

Thanks
Chris

it doesn't really matter actually...i took the top hose from the heater core and installed it to the intake, the lower hose from the core goes to the water pump...it just looks right IMO -- keeps you from crossing the hoses as well...

It does mater as far as the hose sizes go. One outlet is for a 5/8 hose and the other for 3/4. Sure you can swap them, but then one is a PITA to put on and the other will leak.

If I remember my shop teacher correctly, he said "top to top, bottom to bottom". Top heater core outlet to the top of the engine (intake manifold) and the bottom heater core outlet to the bottom (water pump).

Good luck.

On my 82, the front hose connecting to the water pump is 3/4 and the rear hose coming of the rear of the intake by the distributor is 5/8. I just did the manual shut off valves as my core has sprung a leak I believe-and Im not interested in changing it out any time soon.

If your 71 has the aluminum tank like mine does, the top heater core hose goes to the tank. Then the line leaving the tank goes to the water pump. The lower heater hose goes to the intake manifold. I can take some pics if needed. Email or IM.

5/8" to the intake, 3/4" to the water pump. most chevy V8s are like that in my experience

See if this helps....I'm assuming when you said overflow you do not have A/C.

I just ran new heater hoses to my new engine and REDSHARKONBOYDS is correct. I mark/tag everything when I disassemble it just in case *brain-fart* sets in.
