If you need unlimited air, this filter is second only to an open carb throat.
But as a flame arrestor, it's sorely lacking (can't comment on the Xstream).
And as an air filter, I wouldn't use it in dusty locales! :nono:

Re: air cleaners part II (biltogo)
Over the years I've used that type a few times. I still have one today. I use it primarily when I can't get anything else to work with some mods I've made. The foam filter inside is reusable and can be washed. The manufacturer then instructs to coat the foam with oil. I've done this a few times.
It dawned on me on day about the hazard of this type of filter, when I removed the cover only to spot that the underside of the foam was singed(burnt). :mad I've then read in other sources that GM used metal lids to prevent such tragedy.
I had one and a friend told me they were prone to catching fire then I went to a corvette shop here in FL and they said the same thing and suggested I change it asap. Now I run a "normal" style filter (14" x 2").
I used to have one on an old Nova. They look cool but listen to all the other replies. These things can and will catch fire if you back fire through the carb. Stick it on if you are going to show the car but for driving don't use it. Not only will it catch fire but once the element starts buring it will drip all over your carb and its a B#$%ch to clean.
Everyone I know refers to that air cleaner as the fire starter. The foam in the inside is very prone to catch fire. All it takes is one good backfire from the carb and poof there goes the car. I would stay away from that air cleaner.
Are we talking about the Edlebrock filter that filtogo shows or the K & N extreme filter. I was planning to buy an extreme filter but not if it is unsafe.

The little triangular-shaped one...I've heard nothing bad about the K&N Extreme lids.
I bought that one while my engine was being rebuilt, the rebuilder said I could use it but if the engine ever backfires it will suck parts of the filter down into the engine.
I don't know about the K&N tops but sence their not metal I'm to scared to use it.

Re: air cleaners part II (Tominator)
I posted in the other thread that the Edelbrock foam filter is a fire hazard and only filters out bugs and rocks, and won't catch fine dust.
The K&N is completely different. The K&N is a wire screen supported cotton filter with oil that is supposed to be flame resistant (not flame proof). I know that some K&N filters do qualify as a flame resistor in marine applications.
The foam in the Edelbrock is not supported by anything, made of synthetic material that is very prone to melting or catching fire. It also will dry out over use and crumble and parts will fall into the carb and engine.
I have used the one made by Edelbrock and on made by Wieand. They both were sub-par.
I would only use them at car shows or when you are driving your car to a shop to find the right air filter.
DO NOT USE THEM when breaking in a motor, setting carb settings or setting timing. As stated, one backfire and they look like an Iraqi oil well set ablaze.
