From top to bottom
Red (paint)
Dark red (base??)
Silver (paint??)
Orange (original paint!!!!)
Green (Original base?????) really hard coat
Brown (filler?) very thin coat
Fiberglass
Now, I am razorblading my vette and the question is what should I remove? Red paint only? Everything to the fiberglass or leave the green and very hard base??
Without a heat gun a can remove the top layer easily with the heat gun I can get to the green coat
Any advise??
Thanks
You should take it down to the GLASS......It is a pain but will be worth it when you are done...........BTW my car had 7 to 8 layers and all had to cme off before new primer and gel coat were shot
You can take it all down to the glass, but your gonna need to make sure you
get it all covered well with the sealer. I have heard much advice to take it
down with the razor/heat to a gray (or green) primer layer. Then, sand this
down until you hit the ruddy brown primer. Stop here. You will have managed
to go through the red primer in many areas, so a coat of sealer - then have
at it with primer until you get clean guide coats. I'm no pro - but I do read a lot.
:seeya
I used a combination of razor/chemical stripper ....once down to the red primer use scothcbrite type nylon scrub pads and laquer thinner to wash it down to bare glass ...Some goods tips on Lars paper in C3 tools/tech section....Some of the products have been replaced now by updated versions, but its a great place to start...Good luck ..don,t get in a hurry
I am not shure about using paint removers since I am not able to get the brands that are "C3" safe of course I can go and talk to the boat guys for local brands but I still don't want to experiment anything on my vette.
I think I will remove every thing to the hard green coat and build up from there.
Thanks guys
