My new Tuff Stuff 80 amp is in. But I had to modify the 2-prong plug that connects to the alternator....mine was original (1972). The original prongs were horizontally aligned, the new alternator has prongs side by side,...they look like 1 1 now as opposed to -- -- originally. My problem is that hooked up one way, the alternator barely puts out 12 volts and drops to low 11 when I turn on the lights, and the engine sounds funny. Switch the plugs, and the alternator runs great....13.6 volts, and the engine really perks up, but the alternator gets really hot and stays hot until I unplug it. What's going on?????
Re: New Alternator Problem - wrong plug?? (72Shark)
I think they gave you the 'right' alt for your year but it sounds like yours had been updated to an int reg alt. I had a 72 vet eng in my 73 and always asked for 72 parts when talking to the parts people. I bought a chrome alt for a 72 and it came with the same plug your 80 amp has. I ende dup buying a 100 amp int reg one. Guessing a previous owner took the ext reg out of the car when they switched to the int reg alt.

Re: New Alternator Problem - wrong plug?? (Fevre)
the altenator with the plug that looks like "11" is pre '69 for the Vette (can't remember if the first interal regulated alt, had this plug). I believe (correct me if i'm wrong guys)in '69 GM used the internal regulated and by '72 they were using the S10 I (same until '87). I had the same problem on my '74 when I bought it found out the alt. was from a '68 Camaro.

My '69 has the -- -- original too. Looking at the wiring I'm pretty sure it is original.
I got the 100 amp internal from Summit Racing. Worked like a achamp :D

Re: New Alternator Problem - wrong plug?? (Fevre)
From what I've read there are 2 diferent internaly regulated altenators. The first had a plug the same as the externaly regulated came out in '68 called Delcotron, has the square plug (according to my MOTORS manual) the altenator that most are familar with is the SI series that replaced the Delcotron (late '69??) untill being replaced in '87. It has the flat plug.
Re: New Alternator Problem - wrong plug?? (stpman)
So I should get a new Internally Regulated alternator for the '72. ...and...
keep the one I have with the "square plug" (externally regulated) for the "soon-to-be-restored" '68?? Saves on shipping?? Yes/No??
