Wow, is this really true??

The Best of Corvette for Corvette Enthusiasts
I wonder how we could find out the real reason. I could buy into the quality thing, but any of the dark colors would show the defects just as bad, greens, brown, etc

years several experimental colors were added/subtracted. Warbonnet yellow
came and went. Various oranges here and gone.
Thankfully, we can change history - one vette at a time.
Mine's gonna be black someday (gray primer first).

While black was not listed as an available color during the years that you referenced, there are documented instances of Corvettes being painted black by the factory (for sale to customers) during 1970-1976. Typically, cars that were painted in colors other than the listed factory offerings carried a trim tag with the paint code listed as SPEC (PRIM, PRI, or simply a blank by the paint code on the trim tag meant that the car was delivered in primer).
I am aware of a production run of 20 or so cars during 1972 that were painted black and, if my memory doesn't fail me, about the same again during 1973 production. This does not include single orders for black (or other color) cars that may have been processed through a COPO or similar non-standard method.
So, while extremely uncommon, St. Louis did paint at least a few Corvettes black during 1970-1976.
That's very true now, but not back in the late 1960s. William mentioned the quality issue (factory applied Corvette paint of the 1960s-1970s has got to be some of the worst in automotive history) and Tom suggested the trend toward "odd" colors... Both are certainly legitimate explanations and were probably contributing factors for removing black as a standard paint color for Corvettes.
