LAKE WORTH, Fla. -- An artist cooking pork chops near a 5-pound keg of gunpowder accidentally set off a huge explosion Monday that destroyed a workshop behind the Palm Beach Institute of Contemporary Art.
Authorities say a grease fire from the pork chops set off the blasts -- five loud explosions and 20 smaller ones on Lake Worth's main street. No one was injured.
The museum director said a workshop behind the museum and a sport utility vehicle were destroyed. But the museum itself and two historic cottages nearby were not damaged.
The artist, Douglas Ferrin, had permission to use the workshop. He told police he used the gunpowder to make .38-caliber bullets and 12-gauge shotgun shells. Police say they don't expect to make any arrests.
