Here are some pictures of the frame after the body lift. Looks like the frame is solid but there is plenty of surface rust. This should keep me busy for awhile. :yesnod:
Looks like the body mount bolts gave you a bit of trouble. How'd you cut them? I had the most trouble with the ones in front of the rear wheels. I used a piece of exhaust tubing as a heat shield and blasted the head of the bolt off with a cutting torch. Scared the heck out of me that I'd set the car on fire, but I just couldn't find a die grinder or any other cutting tool that would reach far enough into such tight quarters. I just ground the heads off of the other bolts with a die grinder.
A few more years and you may have been to late. It's not even rusted out in the
end-caps at the rear of the side rails ? It does look to be in very good
shape - and solid. However, looks on the outside can be misleading. The steel can be thinned out from the inside of the rails, so go around and try tapping
on all the problem areas with a screwdriver and hammer. If there's any thin
metal - you should fix it before painting. Mine was rotted clean through
under the body seals (between #1,#2 mounts).
Good Luck !! :seeya
I use an electric arc welder cranked waaay up to literally blow the heads off bolts like the one you encountered. Works quick so heat not so severe as with flame torch. Seized up trailing arm bolts are also examples of places to use a arc welder to get them out. Thought it might save you or someone else from a fire someday.
Looks a lot like the one in my garage... minus a big metal pipe with vacuum tubes atached to the front... any plans on how you'll get to the inside of the rails etc... I'd like to sand blast the inside and have been speculating on how to accomplish that.
LemansBlue68 - I was able to use this die grinder combination to get to the #2 and the #3 bolt heads. I bought the arbor and disk at ACE. Several years ago I did the #4 mounts with a blue wrench. Had wet towels everywhere but still scared me to do it that way.
NHvette - The end caps look good and I took a hammer and screwdriver to it in various places this morning and didn't find anything as of yet. It looks like there are some problems in the birdcage at the #3 mounts though. I think that you are the resident expert in this area and will most likely need your expertise when I get to that point.
ricketyray - I still don't know what I am going to do with the frame. There have been many excellent ideas brought up here on the forum on how to deal with this issue but I haven't decided just what to do yet.
It was nice not to see the horror story I expected to see when I pulled the body. I'll try to keep everyone updated as progress is made.
