Now that the Vette can actually be driven in a straight line, (suspension work), and I boosted the rear of the seat track up so my wife can see better (I like the angle better too), she wants to drive it more.
That leaves me some days with our 97 Prism Lsi. Not that bad of a car, I've got a semi decent stereo in it, and with the money I save on gas I can buy more stuff for the Vette.
A few more hamsters would be nice, so I did a search for perfomance mods. Well, a few hits on that car domain thing came up and I thought I was going to :U Some people consider wings, painted calipers and neon to be performance mods! About the only good thing that I got out of my search was that I found a manufacturer for a header (will NEVER have a fart can though) MSD ignition and cold air intake. SHEESH! Are subs, wings, decals and fart cans all those ricers EVER think about?! :banghead:
I think we're all too old. Evidently there is a change in how horsepower is rated now, much like the change in '72 SAE Gross vs Net...
Now it's:
Coffee Can Exhaust= +15hp
Lowered Springs=+10hp
Wing=+25hp (+80hp for a dual-plane wing!)
Flourenscent Paint=+15hp
"Type R" logo = +60hp
Now for a true story: I see the 18year old kid down the street, who modified the 3.0CL his parents gave him for high school graduation (lowered, cc exhaust, intake, white wheels, "Powered by Acura" windshield sticker) at the gas station, and he tells me that he's getting nitrous and a turbocharger put in (he works at Taco Bell, so every dollar he makes goes into this car...his parents should charge him rent!) He asks how many horsepower my C5 has, and I can see him doing the comparison of his car w/nitrous and turbo vs 350hp in the C5... then says "We should go up to the track so we can race." He has that "I can beat you" look...
...then I say: "Oh, the C5 is a car for race circuits, so if you want to do 1/4 miles, I'll take my '69...it has about 435hp."
All he could say (after he picked his jaw off the ground) was "oh my god."
Kids...they spend $30K on a bunch of bells and whistles...put them on a $8K econobox, and still can't beat a 30 year old OHV.
>>Yeah, but there's also a lot of nicely engineered imports out there that will run 10 second 1/4 miles all day long.
It takes a ton of modifications to get any import into the tens. Using the same style of mods and the same budget with an American pushrod engine and you'll likely yield times into the 9s.
just for the record the fast and the furious videos were highly exagerated
there are not masses of econoboxes that run 10s all day long. for an econobox to get into the tens is about the same as us getting into the 9
's with reliable engines that are streetable. doesnt happen unless someone has a lotttta money. and all day long? dont know about that. i work at a mechanics shop and we do work for many of the local racers here. so far weve done about 12k worth of work on a kids acura and his best time slip so far is a 12 second quarter mile with a turbo and a small shot of nos. id like to see some of these 10 second cars that run all day long, cause the only one ive seen and/or worked on was a 3.0 honda that does run 10's. and he gets a rebuild about twice a month.
