Ok, what kind of noises will you get if you don't have enough posi-lube added? I'm trying to isolate a little rumbling noise when decelerating and slow speeds.

Re: Positraction lube (Chris81)
Rumbling sounds are usually bearing noises. Could be diff.bearings or it could be hubs ... but the posi lube won't cause that noise in my humble opine. :mad
Oh great, that's just what I need... I checked for play in the wheel bearings and... nothing. Well, maybe just a hair, but no indication of a problem. I had the differential apart to install a new center pin and side yokes, and everything looked fresh. I took extra time in reassembly to make sure eveything was torqued to specs. Never know...maybe that's where that missing socket got to....
If the clutch packs in the posi don't have the right or enough lube they will make noise on a sweeping right hand turn. Drain out or suck out the old, put in 2 bottles of GM lube and 1 bottle of GM posi lube. Run the car for a day or so and if that is the problem it may go away. Bearings tend to be more of a growl than a rubbing noise.
Hey Chris, how's it going? I had some noises in the rear end when I bought my car. At first it was a kinda moan when moving slow and making a hard turn. I thought something was rubbing at the time. It then turned into a louder moan with some popping. I changed the diff fluid and added 2 bottles of the posi additive and my problem went away completely and hasn't returned yet.
We'll be putting some more parts back on my car tomorrow, stop by if ya have some time.
Here's where I'm at so far. Pulled off the halfshafts and checked the wheel bearings for any noise with a scope. No play, no noise. Ujoints are new Spicers and in good shape. Side yoke end play about .06, maybe a hair less. Does have a touch of up/down movement. Noticed the seal on one side is leaking just a tad. I did add additional posi lube last week, but it made no difference. The rumbling is inconsistent. Might be audible for 10 to 20 wheel revolutions, then disappear, then 3 or 4 more rumbles, then perhaps nothing, then starts over with varying rumbles. Anyway, no particular consistency. Couple of questions...
The halfshafts were recently installed. Not new, but I reconditioned them. If they aren't turning true, what can I expect?
The rumbling started (I believe) after having some replacement TT II's installed on the rear (whole other story). Hmmm... I seems that if it were a wheel problem though, it would be more consistent. Dunno.
Man, I hate the thought of having to disassemble everything under there. Again! Somebody tell me it's just a loose gas cap!! :banghead:
I had a 71 that I would have sworn that the entire rear end was junk. I chattered and hopped when you made the slightest turn at slow speed. A friend said All I needed to do was change the oil and add posi-additive. I would have bet my life saving that it wouldn't fix it. I was wrong. Before we got to the end of my block it was perfect. The first thing to do is change the oil and positively use the additive. (no pun intended) Then drive in tight figure eights for a few minutes. :auto:
I was hoping it would be so simple... It got fresh fluid and posi additive about 300 miles ago, and I added another additive last week. Did the figure eights. Nothing.
Posi itself wont act up and make noise unless yur in a turn. Ide be checkin driveshaft u-joints and pinion bearing.
I don't get that rumbling only in a turn, and it's only in a range of around 35 to 20 MPH when decelerating. I disassembled the rear end tonight. Draining the case and will drop it out tomorrow and remove the drive shaft. The halfshaft ujoints are new Spicer solids and they are fine. The driveshaft ujoints are also fairly new Spicer, but greasable. They look/feel fine as well (on the car) but will check those out too. I don't feel too bad about having to pull the pumpkin out again since one of the seals is leaking and needs to be replaced anyway. Hell, I'm lying... I do feel bad!!
Might seem dumb, but how are the tires? Try rotating front to back on one side at a time and listen for noise. Out of round and moved internal belts can do sme wierd things.
