Default engine removal question

Now that I have my engine taken apart down to the shortblock I was wondering if it would be possible to hoist it out of there without removing the radiator?? I'm sure the hood must come off but the radiator looks far enough away (maybe).

This is on a '69 big block.

Any help is appreciated.

regards, mark :flag :chevy

I'm about to do the same thing- it should work. Worst case, we may have to unbolt the radiator support and lean it forward.

Just remove the hood and loosen the bolts to the radiatorframe. Then tilt the radiator forward, that should give you some more space. But i would remove it completetly..

Remember to mark up the bolts on the hood,so you dont have to realign it,its a PITA.. :smash: :smash:

Be careful about tilting the radiator...don't put too much force on it...it's not "fragile" but it's not a solid piece of metal either! When I replaced my fan shroud I removed the top bolts and loosened the bottom ones...then pushed the radiator forward...there was some creaking sounds...I worried until I put it back together and had no leaks. If I were to do it again I might just pull it out all the way...a good time to replace the lower radiator hose anyway.

---------------------------------

Well, there's two answers to this...FIRST, the engine will come out easy enough - in fact some guys don't even pull the hood. But in my opinion that would just make the job harder.

Second though, why would you NOT want to do the radiator too? Unless of course it has already been done VERY recently. It just does NOT make sense to put a new motor in and NOT do the radiator.

Just my 2 cents. :steering: :auto:

Thanks for all of the replies.

Radiator is fairly new, although it wouldn't hurt to have it flushed while I'm at it.

Thanks again.

might as well pull the radiator, it.s only four bolts and out, beats swinging the motor into it.

I removed the engine from my '74 without removing the rad. tilted the hood forward, removed the fan etc. of the front of the engine and lifted it out. put it back in the same way. there is room but you still must be careful.

If the water pumps off you should have no problem.I've pulled my smallblock over the side three times now with the hood on.

with using a leveler to tilt the block when removing it should clear the radiator. I pulled my smallblock without removing the radiator. I placed some thin plywood to cover the radiator just in case..... :smash:
