Default Power Lock/Window Problem

This summer, I installed power locks/windows in my 78. I got the whole setup from a junkyard. They worked ok at the time, but seemed to be straining. The window motors moved very slowly and one made something of a whining sound. Now the locks make noise, but will not actually lock/unlock the doors and the windows will barely move on thier own.

Is it likely that the actuators/motors are just dying of old age? If so, is there a better aftermarket alternative to the original motors/actuators? I dont really want to have to take my door panels off too many more times, or they will start looking like the old ones (they came off at least once a week to fix something inside).

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

[EDIT]

As a note, all of the switches are brand new, as is the window relay.

Additionally, I cannot use the windows at the same time as the rear defroster without blowing a fuse. Possibly related?

i would have thought it unlikely that both window motors and door actuators would cop out on you at the same time (though you might be really unlucky!!)

.... perhaps it's your wiring or switces?

Have you tested the motors/ actuators by connecting them directly to a 12volt source? .. you'd know then if they were the problem.

The right hand motor works much better than the left, though both of them worked with 12 volt power before I put them in. The locks make the sound like they are functioning, but they do not actually lock or unlock the doors.

Also, the left door is very hard to unlock with the handle inside and impossible to lock/unlock with the key now.

sounds like you need to get inside the door with some grease! ... if you can't lock the door with the key, your poor old door actuators stand no chance!

make sure all the locking mecanism is lubricated, same with the windows.... it's probably just stiff

You definately need to open up the doors again. I'll bet when you do, you will find that something has rattled loose. Maybe a little clip has worked it's way off and now something is binding. Anyhow, the grease will help. Also look at the ends of the electrical connections. They have a habit of going bad after they get old. I bought the new end kits and spliced themin to get my locks working.

What should I use to grease the lock/latch mechanism? I originally removed the whole thing and cleaned it completely out. I put what we used to call refrigerator grease back in it. I used marine bearing grease on the window rollers.

Where could I get one of those wire end kits? That would be great.
