I need to replace the rear cargo area carpet in my 79, Where's the best place to get carpet and how hard is it to replace? Do I have to remove the seats or can I leave them in place? I was thinking of auto custom carpets in Birmington, Alabama. They sell carpet sets.
Re: Carpet selection, How hard is it to do? (SanDiegoPaul)
That is exactly what I am doing today. ACC is available from many sources. I got mine from Willcox. Good price, good service. Most of our supporting vendors sell ACC products. I would be easier to remove at least one of the seats even if you are only doing the rear. The probelm will be that once you do part of the carpet the rest will look "old" Doing the whole carpet set is not a problem. The kits fit pretty good and if you take everything out, it is a good time to insulate.

Well I haven't had a drink in about fifteen years, but if this job is like anything else I've had to do on this car, A few drinks couldn't hurt. Should I get an insulation kit while I'm at it? What kind of insulation can I use in the rear area? One catilog said there wasn't any insulation back there?

Killian, I'm currently in the process of replacing my carpet and reinsulating at the same time. I purchased my carpet from Wilcox and the price was great. Since I'm in the process of installing, I can't say much about the fit since I'm not finished yet. I purchase the Reflectix (sp?) insulation from Lowe's. It's a bubble wrap type insulation with reflective foil on both sides. The reflectix insulation comes highly recommended from many CF members (do a search for carpet). I completely insulated my back deck and rear fender wells with it. If I say so myself, it came out looking pretty good. I had a jute type insulation over each fender well that was falling apart. I removed it. There was a mat type insulation on the deck area and back wall which I left in place and insulated over it. I haven't finished the front yet (tomorrow's project). I hear that the insulation will greatly reduce the interior heat our cars are famous for. Good luck with your project.

PS It's a hot job and if you have any height to ya, be prepared for a little pain. There's not much room to work in, in the back of the car.

Thanks Dog, and Shark tank. I was sure there was something better than the insulation that's in the catilogs and I'm kinda short so I can fit back there without too much trouble. I mistakenly recarpeted the front about five years ago so the color match might be off? they told me at ACC. I'll have to take my chances. Did you use adhesive to hold down the insulation and the carpet or only the carpet? I'm going to try to leave the seats in and only move the console a little to slid the carpet down the front slope, ? I haven't figured out how to do a search here yet!

No question, if you car is as hot inside as mine. In my case that is the ONLY reason I am going to recarpet - just to put insulation down! My carpet is actually quite tolerable. I know it's coming UP and it just wouln't be right to lay the old stuff back down, now would it?? :jester :nono:
Re: Carpet selection, How hard is it to do? (killain)
i also bought some aluminum tape to use on the reflectix insulation along with the 3M trim adhesive...don't buy the insualtion from the vette vendors (way to pricey) i paid 15 bucks for the insualtion at the local hardware store and should have plenty to do the whole car...i will probably be purchasing my carpet kit thru wilcox as well, i've had great luck with them (even though most of there stuff comes from corvette america anyways) i am in the process of laying the reflectix right now...

I didn't use any adhesive. The reflectix stayed in place nicely and I figured that one day I'll do a body off so I didn't want to have to chisel the glue off. The aluminum tape sealed everything up nice too. Once that was done the carpet fit pretty good and only required a few minor trimmings, once you bolt the seats down none of it will be going anywhere. One plus now is that I have an electric fuel pump and I seem to notice it less.
