What started out as a blown up third member wound up being a huge huge project. I got the attacks of "While I am here". Anyway, I finally got the project done today. I have a new third member w/ 3.36's, a new 468 with Edelbrock heads and Comp Cams Extreme Energy cam, Demon 750, and Performer RPM, and some new suspension goodies as well. Today the icing on the cake aftrer initial engine break in was the new JCL side pipes! I went ahead and bought his tubes and had JIM set them up on kill, with no caps. Tubes were delivered exactly as described and are so easy to install compared to the original Hooker tubes!
The second I started the engine up, an ear to grin shot across my face. Wow!! Thjese things sound great! The engine seems to rev a bit faster also. But it made the engine sound deeper as well as enhance the lope of the cam. Since the engine is new, I haven't nailed it. And unfortunately I won't be able to do a legit comparison between the two like Chuck Harmon has been able to do. But I am in love with what I know about them so far. In a few weeks I'm going to take the car to the same dyno Chuck uses to see how they do.
Just thought I'd share this info with you. For those on the fence about JCL's... JUST DO IT!
I would really love to see and hear your car. The car will rev faster with the JCL's compared to most other side pipe mufflers, I know mine sure did. The removal of the caps takes away the kind of metalic sound they used to have. Even though they are a bit louder, I also prefer the deeper sound they make.
The JCL's allowed me to make a lot more power without making my neighbors hate me for all the noise I would otherwise have had to make. One of the best performance investments I've added to the car!
I just put a 500hp 464 into my 74, hooker sidepipes, my JCL baffles are in transit,
I'm just working through the accessory gremlins to get the WP pulley, crank pulley, alt and PS to line up, and I expect to hopefully fire it up tomorrow
We'll have to set up a Skyline cruz for the local boys
I'm up in Antioch, by Walnut Creek. Skyline is one of my favorite cruise routes. Let's definitely set something up!! Actually, I was thinking of doing that route today after I get the alignment done. I'll send ya a PM with my phone number.
As far as the price comment, based on Chuck's and a couple other people's results, gains of up to 50 HP are not uncommon. I bought the pipes and the inserts together, which cost $550. If you buy the inserts and install them into your own pipes, it's only $300. I can't think of any other mod that can be bought for that price and installed so easy to give you that kind of gains. Most 50 HP gains are close to a thousand, if not more, and involves breaking into the engine. That was my justification. Still glad I did it. Especially since some of my buddies stopped by last night and were drooling over the noise. I also went to one of the local cruise spots and every single head in the place was staring at my car when I rolled in, and then wandered over when I parked. Gotta love it...
Man,i really like those inserts.Unfortunatly, after speaking with Jim, the Freightcharge to Sweden, would be around 280$+Vat...I have to come up with my own solution to this problem.. :smash: :smash:
