Ganey, My car is an automatic, and should have the stock gears. (Not sure what they are though) That rebuild sounds like a possibility if it isn't too hard. I'd love to get a crate motor, but I just can't afford that.

TedH, I looked at the website with the rebuild kit, and there are lots of things to choose from. Could you maybe recommend some certain things?

I strongly recommend the 'HP350KH' Street Performance rebuild kit:
http://www.northernautoparts.com/Pro...ctModelId=1668

Chevy 350 (to 1985) STREET PERFORMANCE - HP350KH Hypereutectic Pistons INCLUDES:

Hasting or Sealed Power Moly Rings
Federal Mogul flattop HYPEREUTECTIC Pistons
Clevite Rod Brgs
Clevite Main Brgs
Clevite Cam Brgs
Melling or Sealed Power Hi volume Oil Pump
Crane Energizer Camshaft and Lifter Kit
Cloyes TRUE Roller Timing Components
Pioneer Frost Plugs
Felpro Gaskets

You can specify the rings and bearings sizes and can select from about 10 Energizer cams (to suit the flow potential of your carb/intake/heads/exhaust). You can even upgrade the pistons to domed pistons for a little more money.

Sounds nice. I don't have much experience working on cars since I'm young, but my dad has quite a bit of experience, so how hard would you think this would be for us to do?

You would probably like Comp Cams XE256 best for your stock auto. Get started & you can build better than a crate.

I looked on the comp cams website, but I didn't see the XE256, maybe I didn't look hard enough. Ganey would you recommend using the rebuild kit on my car?

For the money you spend on the intake verses the hp gains,I'd keep the stock intake, and change only the cam.I've run several Edelbrock Performer cams in near stock engines before and the increase in low end to mid range torque is amazing.
The trick here is not to over cam,as the stock components will limit you to around 300 hp at around 5000 rpms. This will be plenty punchy when compared to the stock 190hp.

i wouldn't keep the stock intake, if your using a smallish cam and stock heads the performer EPS might be a good choice, if you're going a bit more radical then the performer RPM air gap would be an excellent choice.
all in all i'd say cam swap would be good, not too expesive, 1.6 rockers will make a big difference, headers are a good idea as well, and perhaps some pocket porting if you can find someone good.

XE-256 212/218 .447/.454
For ex., many are happy w/ stock auto w/ min. 260H 212/212 .440/.440.
Both are good for over 300 HP.

Rebuild is a good idea, hi vol pump not needed & you need to know C/R of pistons w/ your heads. About 9-9.3 is good for that setup w/ iron heads.

I don't mean to hijack this thead, but I am doing the same thing with my 79 L-48. Until I found out that the Vortec Intake does not come with an air conditioning strut boss, EGR port, and has hood clearance problems I was going to go with the Vortec Head and Intake set up, along with the CC XE-256 cam.

What I've gotten so far from this thread is: install a CC xe 256 cam or equiv. and don't expect much help from the Performer Intake. (use the airgap if you don't mind the clearance problem)

So now I've got the motor laying in pieces in my garage and need some advice on what heads I might be able use to replace my stock 76cc's.

I'd like to increase the CC ratio by going to 64cc heads, if I can find them somewhere. Am I on the right track, here??

I'd appreciate any advice.

Thanks.

All the advice give is good. I don't know how much you want to spend. TFS heads are good for the money. Cam choice is also right on. Duals is needed as is the recurved dist. An Air Gap will fit w/drop base for air filter. I would add 1.6 roller rockers for the extra lift and cooler temps from less friction. Hope this helps.

As far as intake being not worth it I have to dis-agree. Have you ever held and aftermarket intake in one hand and a factory cast iron in the other? The weight difference is huge. Aftermarket aluminum feels like a feather compared to cast iron. So theres an advantage of lost weight to begin with. Further more the flow is probably a bit better on the aftermarket manifold. Also, aluminum disipates heat better than iron so the engine bleeds more heat and the plenum stays cooler for a denser air charge. You can get the EDL old style #2101 and its dimentions are the same as stock cast iron. All the benifits are still there and you dont have to worry about hood clearance and all that garb. The 2101's are laying around all over. I got mine used for $50. A new one is $100. Ask around, you can probably get one for cheap. Have it bead blasted and its good as new. But check all the thread holes for stripping and such.

:iagree: i put this cam in too...i have headers, duals, flowies, performer intake, ported heads...i pull from about 1500 right to 5500 no problem. Power falls off around 5600. Oh and i have 3.08 gears with the TH-350

From jegs it costs $162 for kit including cam, lifters, and assembly lube. Cam by itself is $98.

Thanks guys for all the help. I hope to be getting the cam soon, and I'll probably go ahead and the get the intake too. I'll let you guys know after I get it installed and everything. But what kind of power increase can I expect? I assume I'll be able to feel the difference.

Do you guys suggest I get the Performer EPS, or the Performer Air-Gap? The EPS is cheaper, Is the air-gap that much better?
