I am rebuilding my speedo and tach gauges. Now that they are all apart, I was thinking about repainitng the metal bezels. Anyone ever paint these before? A couple of questions:
1. Masking off the chrome edge - Yes or No
2. Steel wool or sandpaper to rough up surface
3. Paint recommendations - Brand and color of black (flat, semi flat, gloss, semi-gloss)
4. Anyone know where paint can be bought in Canada would also be helpful.
Sweet73, I just refurbished my gauge bezels and center console a few weekends ago. I used the techniques and paint in the "Corvette Restoration Guide" and "Corvette Weekend Projects" books. My interior is black and I used MarHydes Black Satin Trim paint for all the parts (plastic and metal). I didn't mask off any of the chrome edging. After dismantling the interior, I washed all the parts with soap and water to remove an wax/cleaner. Then I sanded used a primer, and then the MarHydes paint (about 10 light coats). To get the paint off the chrome edges (and the chrome lettering), I simply ran a sharp Xacto knife along the edges...it worked fine. I did use fine sandpaper to rough up the surface of the flat bezels, but I didn't use anything for the components that had a texture to them. All the pieces turned out great, and my interior looks 100% better. It makes a HUGE difference. Good luck.
