I am in the process of rebuilding engine and front suspension, brakes and steering,I am debating if I should run plug wires in there original location or run them over along the valve covers,I appreciate any advice, pros and cons, let me know. Its a 81 vette 350,with upgrades.
I'm in favor of the original routing. It will require buying the plug wire kit which includes one long piece of wire that you cut to fit, and the plug ends that you will crimp on.
When you run the wires in the stock location up from underneath with the 90 degree ends the engine looks a lot cleaner and not like a pump jockeys nightmare. Remember you have a Vette and not a beat up Camaro. :D
With a nice wiring loom I like the over the vlave cover look. You can order 'Universal' sets that have the plug boots attached and you cut and crimp on the dist boots. I bought a Summit brand set the vette that where blue and came with a nice crimping tool. I just bought a set of Accel 8mm black wire for my Formula.

I just did this on my 80. I bought the Delco wires from Ecklers. They all ran in the original locations except the two on each side that go through the engine mounts. On these I ran them as close to original routing and then went around that area but not through the mounts. The wires were real close in length but they made it.
Okay I guess I need to see some pictures of the engine compartment showing both spark plug wire locations,I had seen some in previous post, and showes some over valve cover with alulinum brackets,Thanks for all the info,I will post some pix of the process of engine ohaul.
When I ran the wires on my 75 I bought the replacement wires that are pre-cut to the correct size. I don't remember the brand. All I had to do for the ones going under the motor mounts was pull the rubber boot off, slide it through and then put the rubber boot back on. To get the boot off, I soaked it in a glass of hot water for a minute or two to soften it up and the boot slid right off. Good luck.
I bought Accell from mid america. Routed them in the original route and they fit perfectly. I was lucky however, I have access to a lift. Made the job far easier. :smash:
I don't remember who's set it was, but I've seen both "vertical" and "horizontal" over the valve cover looms, what's the difference here? Well I guess the difference is clear, but does anyone have pictures of the two different types? Thanks.
I guess it would also depend on Radio Interference. I would still route them in the original location. Just looks different and thats the way it came
I have a 73 (350 cu in.). When I purchased it, the prev owner had just done a tune up, but didn't install the correct wires. He had insted run a set of generic wires over the valve covers. I drove the car home (about 15 miles), and the heat from the engine caught the wires on fire. Luckily I caught it in time.
