This is on my 72 Vette. I just replaced my Factory intake and carb with an Weiand Stealth and Edelbrock 600 cfm Carb. Now I'm unable to close my hood. Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone have a hi-rise hood for sale? Help
my buddy has a 72 vette..stock hood, low rise intake, and holley4150 carb...talk NO ROOM WHATSOEVER. we ordered a holley 1.5" oval air cleaner, still grinded off about a 1/4" on the air cleaner base, and the damn thing still hits the top of the hood. so yea, those stock hoods have no clearance..i'd go with a Lt-1 hood....good luck.
Probably a question with a very obvious answer......but, where do you buy these drop-based filters? I've checked several catalogs and maybe do not know what I'm looking for, but, no luck in locating. Help, please.

Well - around here - Discount Auto Parts sells a drop base air filter assembly for around $20.. It comes with a 3 inch filter.. I ordered a 2 1/4 inch K&N filter from http://www.summitracing.com
This dropped the height of the setup by 3/4 inch...
BTW - there's nothing on the Holley filter assembly that says "DROP BASE".. but the filter assembly actually has e 1 1/4 inch drop base..
Will these drop base air cleaners fit over Holley float bowls? My stock one (73) wont (basically a bowl made around the Qjet), but perhaps a 14" will? Thanks.

I have a Holley 80528.. The Holley drop base filter setup that I bought at Discount Auto Parts fit my Holley carb perfectly!!
I did the same thing Grandsport did. I have the factory high rise LT-1 manifold. Since I don't have the original air cleaner, I bought a "spectre" brand at Checker Auto. Came with a 3 inch filter and a dome top. Used the old flat top and the fliter clears barely enough but fits.
A 2 1/4 K&N will be next, the K&N flows better and a short filter will not compromise airflow.
I'll be installing my hood tomorrow night, so I guess I'll see how this works out. As of now it appears that dropping to a 1/2" spacer will probably do the trick with the K&N X-Streme drop based air cleaner I have on the Weiand intake & 4150 series carb. It has a 2 3/4" element that came with it.

The 2 1/4 inch K&N on my drop base setup flows enough to feed my 465++ HP...

If your setup is too high - go with the 2 1/4 inch instead of 2 3/4 inch filter to get another 1/2 inch clearance...

Most aftermarket drop base air cleaners are notched to accomodate the longer bowls of a dual feed Holley or Demon. An Edelbrock or Carter AFB can use the same bases unless they have an electric choke, which won't clear a lower base without an adapter that raises it. When using a short element, you have to be carefull about having enough clearance between the lid and the vents. For hood clearance reasons, I'm running a 2 1/4" element but with a gasket made from 1/4" tubing under it to provide more clearance at the lid.
