My car came already modified for a DIN (non shaft style, the most common) radio. I initially had a Clarion. Then I replaced it with two Pioneers in two days. Each had a catastrophic failure and was returned. Then I bought a JVC, which has been in there since last week. I really like it. Nice tunes, even without an aftermarket amp (and all the noise that invariably goes with it).
The JVC can display upto 1600 colors and even photos (?). It also plays MP3 discs, so I can play a single disc containing 170+ songs.
The speakers are 4x6 Kenwoods in front and 6x9 Pioneers in the rear.
There are aftermarket stereos that will fit right into your bezel without cutting from almost all of the vette suppliers. I have a Kenwood KRC-2007 in mine and Alpine Amp/Speakers in the rear. Many have pointed it out before that bezels are not expensive, so chop away if you want and put in what you want. If anyone wants to go back to originial, the bezels are available.
There's plenty of room, as the originals are much larger than the aftermarket DIN units. If your bezel is original and not beat up, I'd save it and use an aftermarket bezel or an E-bay cut-up one. The originals are better quality and, hey, its original! Mine was already broke at the A/C vent, so no problem cutting it for my Blaupunkt Santa Monica. I used some kenwood 4x6's in front and 6" rounds in boxes with velcro in back.
That's true.....Thanks. I was thinking of putting the Kenwood 2007 in, but was wondering if there was any others out there. Thanks again!! :flag
There are definitely better stereos than the Kenwoods. But, I am guessing you probably already know that. If I had it all to do again I would probably not have went the way I did as it seems the unit has a hard time pushing the amp and speakers.
Then again... anyone who puts a decent stereo in a vert with sidepipes is somewhat coo-coo.
when cutting your hole, cut it as low as possible without breaking the bezel and/or having bad structural integrity.
If in the future you decide to go for an amplifier as well, you will probably use RCA connecters into the back of the stereo, the newer stereo's plug these directly into the back of the stereo (as opposed to having wires with plugs) ..
This has the effect of lengthening the head unit, and causing some minor
issues with fit in the back and you will be forced to angle the unit at a slightly
more drastic angle causing the face plate to not quite sit flush...
If you are using the head unit's speaker wire outputs.. then you can fold them over and there are no issues...
I have a Blaupunkt Honolulu CD player. '77 and up is a bit easier because of the redesigned console will accept a variety of radios due to the deeper design. You will need to modify the hole to get the DIN to fit. Check your local auto stereo installer. They should have all the goodies you will need.
