Default Trying something unconventional... neon.

Got your attention didn't I?

Now before you freak out and call me a traitor let me explain my thoughts.

When I jump in my car at night it's dark. Very dark. My feet have nice little lights, the back compartment has a dim little light way in the back but if I wanted to read a map I'm basiclly screwed. The other day I saw a deal I couldn't pass up... a Cold Cathode light for a computer for less than 20 bones. Computer uses 12V DC, Car uses 12V DC let's give it a shot. Now I did have the decency to choose white instead of a colored light. I'm thinking about mounting it under the rear window, tucked behind so you don't actually see the light but it illuminates the interior.

I don't know what it will look like or even how well it will work for that matter. If it does look hokey I'll take it out of course. So what do you guys think? Have I turned to the dark side? My thinking is since I'm using it for functinality instead of considering it "dress up" it's not really rice-style. But maybe I'm just deluding myself.

My interior lights don't work (fuse, too lazy) and I don't care. What's the problem!! :D

Oh, and you overpaid for the light :D Normally they are about $16. They do sell ones for cars, but you shouldn't have trouble installing.

Is your car a vertt??? If you want more light then how about one of those rear view mirrors with map lights. I see them on e-bay all the time for about 20 to 40 bucks or get you a mirror out of a vertt in the salvage yard. Every vertt I have owned had the dome light in the rear view mirror.

I think this is a good move. Perhaps even one in front of each seat would be nice to illuminate the leg area...a must for those romantic dates with women that want to show off their legs.

I went to the junk yard and got a rear view mirror out of some generic car with lights built in. Ran the wiring under the header padding. They come on when the doors open or when I use the little switches built into the mirror. Looks clean, and stock, and it was cheap! All it took was a little grinding.

Why reinvent the wheel?
 I do have a real habit of doing that. Swapping the engine instead of rebuild, switching to EFI instead of having carb tuned professionally. I know I tend to go a little over the top sometimes, make jobs more complex than they need to be but trial and error is half the fun.

That being said I really like the idea of the illuminated rear-view mirror. I never knew 'verts had that. Definately something to look into. Thanks!

Ok I will jump into this pool of sharks  I was planning on putting a neon rod behind my front grills. The color? Purple what else. :yesnod: I think it will look mean in the late evening with a ghostly glow. Hey I have been to many hot rod shows where they use these. I can't stand ricers either but some of the stuff is cool.

Ok let me have it :boxing

hmm -- sounds like me. Swapped motor, looking at EFI, yadda yadda yadda. I was also thinking of some neon / computer lighting in my truck (it has no lights at all in the interior).

I was also thinking of some red neon for the gills of my 1980.

Cool idea. One idea that would definately put you over the edge is put a green neon light under your hood so there is a soft green glow spilling out from your fenders. You then tell all the ricer boys you have a nuclear reactor for an engine! If they believe you, tell them for $1000 you'll convert thier engine to nuclear power too, that means you'll make $980 profit off of every car!
PS- I expect a % of the profits
