Default choke setting

i'm am running an edelbrock 1910 carb on the 454. it has been rejetted with 50 rods and 77 jets, since i have installed hooker sidepipes i have noticed that at idle, when cold, the exhaust smells rich. i dont know if i just noticed this because the location of my exhaust or if this could happen because of changing the exhaust. should i focus on the choke, or focus on rejetting?

thanks

If the carb is in good condition and adjusted properly, jetting shouldn't affect mixtures at idle. Once the engine is warm and the choke has fully opened, it shouldn't have any effect either. The idle mixture adjustment is a likely suspect but there are many other things that could also cause incomplete combustion at idle and result in a stinky exhaust. A fault in the ignition (plug, wire, cap, etc.), a big cam, retarded timing, etc..

I don't know if you had a cat before, but when you remove the cat, the gas of today will give off a rich type smell. The additives they used to replace lead do that without a cat. Check out this link for lots of info on gas http://www.gasolinefaq.com
