Default HELP!!!! Comps XE268, cam degree bushing kit question

When my motor was assembled I chose an XE268 and a Comp Cams double roller timing chain, part #3100. I didn't supply the bushing set, so the builder used Comp Cams degree bushing set, part # 4760.

As luck would have it, I forgot to leave the cam card when dropping of the cam. By the time I realized my mistake, he had already installed the cam "straight-up". The builder said he degreed the cam from the numbers on the cam box.

The bushing kit has four remaining colored bushings:
Copper - noticable offset
Green - noticable offset
Grey - Noticable offset
Black - no noticable offset

My question is this, What color is the bushing he used? (assuming the kit had five bushings) But more importantly does that bushing have any offset ?

I just want to have that "peace of mind" before buttoning up the bottom end.
Thanks, Steve.

If he installed the cam straight up it should still be in the advanced position since there is an advance already ground into that cam. Sorry I cant help with the bushing question. Ive never seen the info needed to degree on the box. That info is on the cam card. He probably just installed it without adding any extra advance or retard. In that case the cam would still be advanced due to the grind in advance.

He used the silver 2° bushing. The question is did he advance it or retard it? If he retarded it 2° then the cam is installed "straight up. If he advaced it then the cam is in at 4° advance.

Yes, and another question would be what was the goal? What position did you want it in? He may have used the 2 degree bushing to retard the cam back to the straight up position, when a desired effect of the ground in advance was to have the cam in a slightly advanced position. Advancing the cam will help support better low end while retarding will support better top end. Many things need to be decided before even begining to degree the cam.

I took off the french lock, it's the silver one. I plan on taking the engine to 5000 regularly, 5500 occationally, 6000 once in awhile and 6200 rarely. Mods are in my signature.

Thanks again, Steve.

Looks like a decent setup. Do you know what yur compression ratio is? What rear gears do you have? I had a XE268 in my car at first. I liked the cam alot but I did notice a definate drop in low end power and TQ. With the stock L48 cam it would spin wheels if i wanted. After adding the 268 it wouldnt spin em anymore. The 268 did definatly boost the mid and top end though. If i can remember the power band of that cam was 1800 to 5800rpm. A "straight up" install would help support yur rare desire to take it to 6200. At the same time it will add a bit more lug to the far bottom end. If you really want to play with cam timing you could consider adding a two piece timing cover while yur at it. That way if you want to improve the bottom end its much easier to get to the cam gear and change the offset bushing. Advancing the cam will help the bottom end. This would make gental pulling of from a stop more tollerable. With that cam in a straight up position, I would guess yur gonna have to rev it up a bit more to get a good launch.

Jvette73

My rear is 3:55. I think my compression will be in the high side of 9.5:1
The heads are the 64cc combustion chamber ones.

Ok, I called Comp today. They said if I install the XE268 with the black bushing (0 advance or retard) the cam is ground 4 degrees advance. This will give me a power band in the 1600-5800 rpm range. Does this sound right?

Thanks Steve.
