Hey hun, look at these landscape ties I got for nothing. Im gonna make a permanent engine hoist in the back yard with em. Yeah right, we all know how well that would go over. The the better approach worked. Hey hun, check it out, Im gonna build a swing for the kids. It went over perfect. Ive pulled several motors with it and even a motor/tranny togeather one time. Just wrap a chain over it and attach a come-along. Lift the engine out, push the vehicle back and drop it into a wheel barrow or whatever. Re: Engine hoist disguised as swing set (The Dude)
Funny you say that Dude, I was thinkin the same thing when I first made it. Its in the corner and it can be seen from the road out front. I wonder how many other passers by have thought the same thing. Maybe its presence is helping keep the bad guys away. :nono:
Re: Engine hoist disguised as swing set (Jvette73)
The Auto Paint & body shop in my hometown had one of those things on wheels. Made for easy 'borrowin' as they kept it outside. With their permission, I wheeled it down the street and through an alley to my backyard for pulling the tired 307 smallblock from my 71 Nova and dropping in a rebuilt 283.
Re: Engine hoist disguised as swing set (Jvette73)
 If you ever need to borrow a cherry picker - we've got one and are right down the road from you guys. :D Hey, is that contraption wide enough to pull a body off a frame? :D
Re: Engine hoist disguised as swing set (Jvette73)
gtr1999, those are all 8' ties, so its 8' wide and 8' high. That also answers Juliets question of weather its wide enough to do a body off. Most definatly it is. See that Blazer in the pic? That contraption was used to change the engine in that. I did have to put smaller tires on the front of it to lower the truck enough the get the motor to clear the rad support and grill and all that. Had the motor lifted as high as opossible on that one and it just barely cleared.
Ganey, you might remember that Kym was banned after getting into a flame with a moderator over something she posted in the O/T section. Sure she could visit this site, but knowing her, if she cant speak out or post back, well shes not really interested anymore. She knows now full well of my trickery in approach to building this thing. I laugh and joke about it with her. After all shes seen me use it as a hoist several times. The kids get lots of use playing with the swing and tires too. I also used it to help get rid of a 55gallon drum of used oil I had. Rolled the drum over to it, hoisted it up, backed the truck under and loaded it up. The drum was taken to a recycling center.
The tires were intended to be for climbing. My stepson who was 10 at the time added the numbers later and would throw the ball thru and talley the score. We have also used it a B-day parties to hang the pinyata.
gtr1999, yes, 6"x6"x8' pressure treated. You dont really need the fine finished ones either and they are more expensive. I got these for nothing from someone who had em just layin in the yard. You can get the rough finished or 2nd tier ones for cheaper. I cut the angles with a chainsaw and hammered them togeather first with 16penny toenails to hold it up then drove them tight togeather with 8" spikes.
