In this picture the top hole looks like it was ment to mount to the same bolts that holds a valve cover in place.
Is it a heat shield for something ??

I have never seen a part like that on my 1980.

Looks like a heat shield to me too. For the starter maybe? I'd follow the exhaust track and look for places it could fit.

I think that is the heat shield that protects the starter wires !

I think I know where it goes. I removed a peice like that on my 80. Driverside, REAR, around the battery compartment. If I am not mistaken, it protects the battery cables.

I agree with 71,454,4spd ----- it bolts to the frame under the parking brake bracket and then to the bottom of the car (under the battery)

:iagree: Protects the battery charge cable that runs back to the battery from the alternator (also a ground cable). You may also want to check the insulation on the cables to make sure they are in good condition. A little copper anti-seize on that part where it bolts up to the frame will lessen corrosion (aluminum and steel).

:iagree:

I agree, that's it but I don't think it's supposed to be bent like that, mine was reasonably flat

I tried several places and nothing seemed to mate up with the holes. Can someone who has this installed on thier car provide a picture. It makes sense what everyone is saying but I can't see anywhere the small whole will bolt to..

Koz, it goes under the drivers side and protects the battery wires. Right underthe battery compartment. Just put the one back on my 81 yesterday.

THANKS!!! Can you post a picture. What did you bolt it to?

I just went back under there and I can't figure it out. The little hole on the side has nothing to bolt to no matter where I put it. Please post a picture.. Thanks..

Small hole bolts to the frame (crossmember), large hole bolts to the underside of the compartment that holds the battery. The backside of the aluminum plate, where it bolts to the frame, may have deteriorated from corrosion caused by galvanic action between the aluminum and the steel frame.

If you first (loosely) attach the aluminum guard to the bottom of the battery box, and then put the small hole on the frame crossmember, I think you will see where the hole lines up with the bolt hole in the frame.
