Default New to forum, heater problem

Hello all, I have been reading over this forum and have found you to all be incredibly helpful to everyone. I have a 1980 that has stock AC. Anyway, the problem is that the heater will not turn off. It is always putting out a great deal of hot air and it makes it very uncomfortable in the summer. The temperature control lever is also broken, does this automatically mean that we need to get a new control unit or is there any kind of parts avaliable to fix this. The heat comes out of all the vents, and the fan speed and blower selector levers do not seem to affect this at all. Any suggestions?

Thanks for all your help.

That temperature control is connected to a vacuum switch (or relay) above the glove box. This switch controls the vacuum to the heater control valve which is under the hood, forward of the passenger side firewall. Since your temperature control is broken, this valve is probably staying open allowing coolant to flow through the heater core.

As a cheap temporary fix, you can install a manual shutoff valve in line with the heater hose, near the existing heater control valve. This will shut off the water flowing through your heater core. It's a standard plumbing valve, availible at a hardware or plumbing store. Maybe someone that knows the size will check in.

The whole HVAC panel is availible or you may be able to just replace the controls behind the panel for less $$$. I did it on my '85 Camaro.

Take a look at this web page, http://home.attbi.com/~jchadwick/ventilation.htm, which has fairly detailed explanation on how the whole system works.

As to the temperature control lever, it depends on where it broke as to what you will need to replace.

The manual valve will give you some relief. But if hot air is being introduced elsewhere the problem, in some reduced form, will continue.
