Default small temp sender problem solved!

Hopefully, anyways, I have found a solution for those who need a smaller temp sender. Tried a couple auto parts stores until I was able to get a gander at their listings myself (boy are they protective of those) and found the specifics for the factory sender. 72 - 88 ohms at 220 degrees. That was the key. So I looked through the book for the closest match and found an early 90's Isuzu sensor that is an exact match, unfortunately it is metric threads and I think I would have worse luck finding a metric thread to 1/2 npt adapter than I would finding the correct temp sensor. So I kept looking and found... are ya ready??? For 30 years Volvo used a sensor that has a range of 64 - 76 ohms at 220 degrees!!! Not too hard to scrape up a 5 ohm resistor, if its even necessary. And it is 3/8 npt so it will bolt in without an adaper. So I am off to the auto parts store tomorrow (the one I whose book I looked thru didn't stock them) and since I installed my stock one in my intake manifold I should be able to do comparisons really easy. I really didn't want wires running to the front of the manifold.

OK, hope it works for you. Volvo parts don't seem to last long though. Also, could you indicate just why anyone would NEED a smaller sensor?

For one thing, If he has swapped from the original engine to a crate motor like a ZZ4, the temp sensor fitting in the head location is the smaller npt hole. 1971's temp sensor is the larger npt size so the sensor will not fit in the head. Its hard to find the proper ohm range to work with your original guage in the small npt size. I just installed my original sensor in the intake and measured the differance in temprature at the head and intake locations. Its only about 10 to 15 degrees so I live with it.

If you can get someone to do a little tig welding you could try this. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=512286
A coupling cut in half and a nipple welded in.

BTW, the part number on that temp sender is WT510. I went to the junkyard saturday and picked up 3 sensors from different Volvo's and none of them were 3/8 npt. Need to find a parts store with that model in stock.
