I was driving on the freeway last night and it was cold out. Tops on, windows up. I could feel cold air rushing into the car. Id I put my hand just to the right of the shifter I could feel a steady blast. Any ideas on where to look to remedy that ?
It could be a number of places. I had a gap in the firewall to body seal on the passenger side. This let engine air into the car through the recirc duct at the passenger kick panel. After looking, I had the same gap on the drivers side too.
Here is a picture of what I am talking about.
I'm sure that it could be other things too, but this was my problem. I am installing vintage air, so I am sealing everything up. :)
Hey Derek,
I think Mike actually pulled his engine just to show you that hole down there. Does this forum have the best help a guy could ask for, or what?

There could be several sources. However, in the area of the console, I would first suspect a torn or degraded lower shift boot on a 4 speed or the similarly functioning round rubber seal on an automatic shifter cable. The rubber seal on the edges of the foot well fresh air vent doors could be suspect. A separation may occur in thew bond between the fiberglass firewall panel and the underbody panel. Or a crack or damage to one of these panels. My L89 has floor board cracks from power shifting. All the cables, hoses and wires passing through the firewall are sealed with grommets and a black tar like sealer. The heater may leak air even when theoretically poopie off. Or the heater boxes may not be properly seated on the firewall or be damaged. On AC models the plenum actuators may nor be closing outside air vent doors. Any and all could leak air. Get the appropriate model year factory assembly manual for assistance.
