Gen. VI mechanical fuel pump question
I am running the 71-74 correct BB mechanical fuel pump I got from Paragon, and it's making a lot of noise. I don't think it's the pump itself, but it sounds like maybe the pump rod is short and is slapping against the pump arm. Sounds like a lifter tick. I pulled the pump off the block and ran it, no noise. I tried using no gasket, but there is still noise. I compared the pump rod to a new one and they are identical. Any ideas?????

I just went through the same problem on a small block. Turned out it was the fuel pump itself. After I bought the replacement pump I compared the two pump arms. The new one had an arm with a noticeably longer reach (distance from the mounting wall). I'm guessing the tick I was hearing was the arm hitting it's max travel on the upstroke. Anyway, the new pump fixed the problem. I've also heard that a weak return spring will create clicks from a fuel pump.
