Default only slightly off topic: TREE MUST DIE!

i spent all weekend in the garage working on the car (just service stuff), the whole time sneezing and wheezing. it has been windy the last few days and my neighbor has a mesquite tree. for those of you who don't know the 'joy' of mesquite trees, let me explain: they give off pollen like a bazillion of anything else in the world you can imagine. i have green 'snow' in my pool, garage, cars, even in the house (this stuff can go right through the screen material).
of course the wind always blows from his direction toward mine, so he doesn't have to put up with this crap. meanwhile i'm under the car, which is on jackstands, and have a sneezing attack. this crap can get painful just in bouncing your head off hard objects! i was sneezing so much my nose was bleeding and my chest ached.
about three years ago i made this guy an offer. i told him i would pay to have that tree removed and plant any tree (within reason) he wanted, and he wouldn't take me up on it. if you had a neighbor that had a problem with something like that, where not only is it a nuisance, it's a health issue, don't you think you might be willing to work toward an amicable solution? i mean crap! i want to get along with my neighbors but you can bet he's not getting invited to any summer cook outs.

There's a certain type of nail, or several, which I've heard :D can kill a tree in time. Copper, I think. Not that I'd use or condone such a tactic. :nono: :D

Go to your local hardware store and get this stuff from Ortho called "woody stump killer". Then, in the middle of the night be like a stealth plane and dump this stuff at the base of the tree, and voila! It will start dying in no time! This guy is a real jerk not to accomodate you, I know I would. :mad

Copper nails will do the work..put them almost at groundlevel,so the neighbour dont run in to them when he cuts down his dead and dried out tree.. :smash:

What a jerk! If my neighbor had that problem and offered to pay to remove and replace with my choice I'd be happy to take them up on that offer. I hate to see people kill trees but at least cedar makes darn good bbq'ing wood! ;)

No neighborhood association or anything that could threaten him with fines? (My neighborhood is psycho, so this quickly popped to mind, I know one guy was fined $10.000 a year for having an ugly house!!) Maybe the city could get involved? If not, I like all these other ideas, just don't get caught :D

thanks for the show of support, guys. i thought i was being pretty damn reasonable about this thing. now he's been talking for a year about pulling it so he can put an RV pad on that side of his house. still waiting on that one, but i might have to help it along ;)
i pulled the car out of the garage this morning and you should see the layer of green from this thing. it's in and on everything! it looks like i have a green blanket over my pool. freakin' crazy.
BTW, dave, that one pretty much tops it off. :lolg:

I agree, I should clarify that the guy built this house... and it looks like a strange futuistic gym covered primarily in copper... Still it's messed up. Fences aren't alowed in our front yards... no cars parked in the grass (so where am I supposed to put the parts car?!) If it was me and not my parents that owned a house there, I'd probably care enough to do something about i!

You and me both! I'm allegic to mesquite pollen (other desert plants, too).

My upwind neighbor used to have a cottonwood tree. There is no tree I hate like I hate cottonwood (and I'm a forester!). The damn cotton in May and June is unbelievable. It floats on the breeze and clogs air intakes in minutes. It collects in great big furry piles anywhere that the wind has an "eddy", like in my garage! Every summer, I'd have to tear into the front of all our vehicles and use water hoses and compressed air to try to get the cotton out. When that tree was in full bloom, on a windy day, it would literally appear to be snowing outside. The house A/C unit (heat pump) would get clogged with that mess at least twice a month.

All the neighbors hated the tree. Finally I talked to the guy. Turns out, he hated it too, but couldn't afford to have it taken down, and didn't have any tools. (He wasn't the "handyman" type, he said. ) So, we agreed that all the neighbors would chip in (pun intended), an in less than 4 hours there was nothing left but the stump. He can pay to have the stump ground down if he wants to, I don't care.

:hurray: No more cotton!!! :hurray:

Sorry your neighbor isn't more agreeable. A hand sprayer filled with a standard mix of woody stump killer and water will work just fine. One squirt every day (or night... :) ) and the long slow decline will begin. Just be sure to offer to help take down the tree after it starts dying, for the sake of your conscience and good karma.... :yesnod:

I think you guys are missing the obvious here. This is merely Bubba's giant natural sling shot. It's an idea he'd been working on for years. It allows him quick egress when the Mrs's is on his case.
