I've been getting my car ready for it's first show this weekend and in looking it over I decided that the windshield has to be replaced. It's the original with many marks, scratches and pits. I'm wondering what is involved. Does just the trim around the windshield have to be removed or does the whole T-Top halo panel have to come off. How about the side pieces? I've had windshields replaced on other cars where they came out to the house and did it right in the driveway. Also, what's a reasonable price. Any input would be appreciated.

I had the windshield replaced on a '72 a couple of years ago, and was truly shocked. Just about any auto glass shop would do it for around $120. Had it done while it was at a body shop, but they also would have done it at my house for the same price. I've decided that a new windshield is about one of the cheapest repairs you can have done on a Vette! :yesnod:

Not sure, since I've not yet done this job, but I was with the understanding that I needed to get and install new pillar weather strips when doing a windshield replacement. Something about needing to remove these strips to get at some screws or something? When checking on prices, I found that the windshield install would run about $150.
Re: Has anyone had a windshield replaced? (vettfixr)
I had mine replaced on my 69 3 weeks ago.
I used a place called Four Star auto glass in Yonkers. They came out, removed the old, installed the new. I haven't got the invoice in front of me, but I think it was $249 + $30 for mobile installation.
I had to remove the side trim (the two pieces of stainless and weatherstrip on the pillar) and the top piece of stainless (its an inch wide and curves around the top of the winshield) I also had to remove my wiper door and trim pieces from the top of the fenders.

I recently had a new one installed at my house. It cost me $305 CDN. I tried getting the glass company to pay the deductible but they said on the older vets there is not enough money for them to pay your deductible. They only have to remove the outer trim, not the inside. It doesn't take long but if you can help by holding one side it makes it alot easier for the guy.

Thanks guys. It doesn't seem to be as big a deal as I thought. I'll have to search around in my area and get some prices. Has anyone used an installer in the South Jersey area?
Re: Has anyone had a windshield replaced? (vettfixr)
Auto Glass company here in Tampa performed the replacement in my driveway for $175. They even gave me a day between the removal of the old windshield and install of the new one to clean and apply POR-15 to the windshield frame.
Make sure they check out the post for rust. I had mine replaced 3 years ago. The shop wire brushed the post and repanted it before they put the windshield back in. I have seen some that were so badly rusted that they had to be cut out and new post welded in.
Re: Has anyone had a windshield replaced? (redwingvette)
I think my posts will be OK. When I painted the car I had all the moldings off and the posts only had some slight surface rust. I cleaned all that off and painted it with POR 15. Unless there is rust under the windshield adhesive (not likely, I hope) I think it will be OK.

I have had many new ones put in newer cars by Safelite glass. They are located by the Garden State racetrack "circle" They just did my Voyager for under 300 and did it in less than an hour. I ahve to do my windshield also. It is very pitted and someone ran the wipers with no blades in them and scratched it all up. I don't know how they would do on a classic but they were reasonable
Re: Has anyone had a windshield replaced? (Gordonm)
Thanks Gordon, I'll have to check them out. I finally realized how bad my windshield was when I started using Glass Wax. I love the stuff and it really shines glass perfectly with no streaks. But on my windshield the pits were so bad that the Glass Wax was drying in them and when you took it off it looked like the windshield had white acne.
