Offcourse i am in the middle of pulling my balancer and the one at the auto hobby shop has seen much better days. What types are a good one to get and what size bolts are used to hold the balancer in place while you torque against it? I guess i neeed to know the size of the balancer bolts! And if anyone has any tricks on this feel free to list them!
I bought one from Auto Zone. I came with 3-4 different size bolts to cover multiple makes. after you remove the crank bolt, take the washer off and put the bolt back into the crank. It doesn't need to be real tight though. Then use the balancer remover. This will prevent damaging the crank bolt threads with the pointed part of the remover. Don't ask how I know.
I bought a separate "installer" from J.C. Whitney for $20. :chevy
Here's a pic from Jeg's....this one is $44, and I could be wrong on the Whitney price. Sure beats hammering it on, which is a no-no.
The installer main bolt srews into the crank and the silver portion is turned slowly, pushing the balancer onto the crank snout.
Do you lube the crank snout or pulley bushing with oil before installation? Or would that make it too easy? :D
Brett
That is what I do plus start it with a longer bolt (ARP lube on threads and snout) then switch to the regular bolt. Slides on pretty easy and only cost about $1 for the longer bolt to get it going on.
